Need suggestions from experts! First major purchase, $200 budget

Hello everyone, this is my first post on Head-Fi. After several days of roaming around the forums and looking at a variety of reviews and threads, I decided to make an account and ask for some help. I'll try to give a somewhat detailed description of what I'm looking for. I've got around $200 saved up for headphones (and maybe a cheap portable amp) and I need to make the best investment possible. I'm new to the advanced stuff, but I know more than your average Joe. I know a bit about frequency responses, distortions, and other terminology, and I have a solid general idea of what sounds good or not and what brands are good and what their strengths are. I'm fed up with the stuck-up Beats-loving people too, so along with maximum quality for the price, showing up these people is another priority.

Again, my budget is around $200. I'd buy a cheap portable amp if necessary, but hopefully I won't have to. I've done quite a bit of researching and have mainly been looking at the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s and the Ultrasone HFI-780s and HFI-580s. Right now I am leaning toward the ATH-M50s but this is a major purchase for me and I want to have your opinions on these and any other possible choices you may come up with. So here's a little bit of information that might help:

-I mainly listen to electro, house, indie rock, indie pop, and alternative metal (wide variety, sorry). I occasionally listen to dubstep, but increasingly less, so I probably won't want too bass-heavy headphones.
-I do not want active noise cancelling headphones due to the incessant and unpleasant buzzing/humming.
-I will mainly use these at home, in the car, and at school (college next year, high school now).
-Again, I'd prefer if they didn't need an amp.
-Build quality is important to me. I'm very careful with my possessions, so I'm not concerned about them breaking, but I just like things with that "premium" feel.

If you have any other questions about what I might be looking for, please ask! I really want to spend my money wisely and make the right decision. If my experience is good here, I'm probably going to be on Head-Fi a lot more and I hope to become a very knowledgeable member so I can one day help others too. So that's it for my Head-Fi intro and inquiry post. Thank you in advance for your help!

HFi 780 imo.

Bump...

For 200$ I would personally get the audio technica m50's and the Fiio e7. I've heard them both together and they sound really great for the price.

You get great sound with portability and alot bang for the bucks IMO. If I were on a hard budget that would be the combo I would go for.

Use in the car? while driving?

CALs (Creative Aurvana Live) closed, nice sound, great price at Amazon and Creative Labs.

Cups are on the smaller size, barely fits around my ears.

Denon AH-D1100 closed, great sound, more bassy sound, Electronics Expo has then for a great price, need to use the coupon code "BOUNTII".

Both headphones can work decently without a headphone amplifier.

But using a headphone amplifier would bring out their best.

I would also go for the ATH-M50. They don't need an amp at all, but if you're willing to shell out they go really well with the E7, as mentioned above. The M50 is also very well-built (you can read about a German store manager dropping mine down an escalator before strip searching me here), and mine don't have a scratch on them despite my clumsiness. They're built like a tank and sound like a dream, especially for somebody just getting into the hobby. I think you'll like them.

Thanks for the insight everyone. I've almost fully decided on the ATH-M50s and I'll probably have to settle for the FiiO e6 due to budget constraints. I know it isn't the best portable amp, but it's a good value.

I also wouldn't dismiss the little CMoyBB from JDS Labs if you're looking for a great amp value.
