Grado SR 325 is driver mismatch

Hi all.  I recently acquired a pair of Grado SR 325 is headphones, which sound pretty amazing as far as I am concerned.

I have one gripe however, as when I listened to a few tracks in mono, I found the sound to be slightly skewed to the left (eg the left driver was playing a bit louder than the right).  Today I brought out a sound level meter, and indeed I am finding that there is a difference between the drivers of up to 2 dB (1 on average, I tried a few different frequency signals).  Is this normal, or should I get these replaced?

On the Grado website I see they claim matching to 0.05 dB, so based on that the headphones would clearly be defective.  However, I have learnt to take this sort of manufacturer spec with a pinch of salt, so I am asking here before taking any action :-)

Thanks in advance!

you get the same results using several different tracks?  Sure all your cables are in the whole way?  I'm just attacking the issue from a different direction to make sure everything's been ruled out.  Headphone wise I'm not sure how to help. Except I'd also try them in a different amp and see if you get the same result.

Hey, thanks for the reply.  The cable is indeed all the way in, I have tried 3 amps and 2 sources, and played simple mono sine waves at different frequencies, measuring dB in each ear.  Left is higher by 1 dB usually, which is barely noticeable but is kinda annoying as all singing voices are slightly skewed to the left.

Anyway, I got in touch with the seller and I should be getting a replacement in the new year, so hopefully the issue will be sorted then.  In the meantime, I have switched to an amp with balance controls and balanced it so it cancels out...  BTW, do you know if the quoted "0.05 dB" match is actually a realistic value, or are they just making it up? confused_face%281%29.gif

They list different matching with different phones and I always assumed it was realistic but.....???

It could be your ears. I know I can hear more shine on cymbals on my right ear than my left. Probably not but just a suggestion.

I got the 1dB difference from a sound meter, so I doubt it :D
