hd 558 and m50

Hello all. I have acquired myself a pair of ath m50 and hd 558. I also have a turtle beach ear force dss 7.1 SS simulator. Now, when gaming, the hd 558 are fine for me with the ear fore DSS. However, when i plug my hd 558 into my sansa fuze, i cant hear that much of a difference soundstage wise. This is very annoying, as i got the hd 558 because of their supposed great soundstage. Am i missing something? Or do i just have high maintenance? Is ot possible im just bad at telling the differences? Edit: btw, i did the foam mod on my hd 558 if that matters.

IIRC, my ASTRO Mixamp does not widen the soundstage very much, if at all. In fact, the only thing it really did was murder the bass on any of my headphones (so footsteps can be heard more easily) and allow the microphone on my ASTRO A40's to be used at the same time as the headphones.

I tried listening to very instrument-oriented music, and found that it sounds..... *gasp* the same with less bass.

Of course, the ASTRO Mixamp != Ear Force DSS, but they are both mixamps meant for gaming.

Thank you for replying. However, i am not using the ear force dss with music. I have the hd 558 plugged straight into my sansa fuze, and i find the soundstage not a huge step up over the ath m50? Where does the problem lie? In me, my headphones, player??

Oh, I thought you meant you couldn't hear a soundstage difference between your Sansa Fuze and maybe your computer paired with your DSS.

Unfortunately, I don't have an ATH-M50 with me right now (my brother has it), but I do have my HD 555 (downgraded version of 558, apparently), and it has a decently-sized soundstage. I know that the M50's are closed headphones, so they should have a relatively smaller soundstage compared to open cans.

I really wish I had my brother's M50's right now to help you. My brother will be back in about 3 days, but I don't necessarily feel as though my observations would exactly help after so long. Hopefully, another member will be able to answer your question.

Now I shall stop before I start sounding like some customer support person.

Thanks again. Whenever you get a chance to compare, id love to hear what you think. Does the sansa fuze put out good enough soundstage? Would an amp really shine the headphone's soundstage? (Like dramatically, cuz seriously i dont tell much of a difference). Also, ive only had the hd 558 since yesterday, so do you think it needs burn in for it to achieve any significant amount of soundstage? (Im really sorry for all the questions... I dont know that much). Thanks so much.

Although unfamiliar with the sanza fuse, maybe you would get more out of the 558s my amping it properly? Just an idea I'm throwing out, because I myself am not well informed.

I actually own both cans and i assure you that the sound stage on the 558's is indeed quite larger. but these phones get all congested and flat when un-amped. Pair them with a decent amp and they will sing smily_headphones1.gif
