Looking for new, quality headphones

Thread Starter

Hey guys,
Recently I've decided that im in need of some new sounds equipment for my PC. I'm a heavy PC gamer who mostly plays MMO's like WoW or SWTOR but I also play racing games, FPS games and just about everything else. Music wise I mostly listen to heavy bass music (techno, dubstep) and metal (no screamo, just melodic). You could consider me an audiophile with my music so i'd like it to sound as good as possible. Id also like to have headphones that I can easily (well, relatively easily) take with me when i travel/just around the house.

My budget is $300. I'm looking for headphones that are very good for the games I play and sounds great with the music I listen to as well, even when taken away from the PC and plugged into my iPod. I've looked into the Astro A40's and the Mixamp but i've seen so many reviews for other headphones that i'm really confused about what to get.

For my setup, games I play, and music I listen to what would you guys recommend be the perfect headphones for me? I want to make sure I get the right pair since $300 is a lot to drop on headphones. I don't mind getting an Amp with the headphones either if thats what it needs to produce amazing sound.

If I left anything else out please let me know. Thanks!

Thanks

Since you plan on using them with an iPod, I'm assuming you're only looking into closed cans.

You could buy yourself an Audio-Technica ATH-M50 with the FiiO E7 for under $250, depending on price fluctuation, and be a happy camper. The M50 is a little bassier than most of the ~$150 cans out there, and a good amp can really bring out the bass, which you obviously are after.

Although the M50 is a good purchase, I'm going to suggest against getting a Fiio E7. The Fiio E7 is a decent deal because it has a quality DAC attached to it, but the amp inside is the exact same amp as what is in the $20 Fiio E6 or the Fiio E5. In terms of overall value for portable audio, I'd call them low for being both bulky and not giving out that much energy.

Get Denon D2000s.

Used Denon D2k, $200, Xonar DG, $20-30, FiiO E7 $80 (You don't really need one for the D2k though.)
Total: $300-310

I say go with the Denon 2000's as well.

I say go with the Ultrasone Pro 900, if you can find it used for a good price and get FiiO E7, for a total of around $300.

Wait, what why?

The Fiio E7 is a USB DAC, why would you buy a dedicated sound card with that? The Fiio E7 likely has a better DAC and the whole point of a USB DAC is to bypass the noisy electrical insides of the computer and come out with higher fidelity audio conversion. If you're going to get an E7, at least use it for its intended use.

Cuz my sound card is good enough, I doubt the E7 dac is better but not sure. With my D2Ks I hear no static, noise, distortion. the Xonar DG is REALLY good. It has some cool audio effects and the OP said he watches movies, Dolby headphone is GOLD on the D2ks with movies imo.

What sound card is used in the PC computer?

Sennheiser HD-558s, open, 50-Ohm.

Go to the Electronics Expo website, put the Senn HD-558s into the shopping cart, use the coupon code "BOUNTII"

Leaves lots of left over cash for other stuff.

But why not the Fiio E6? It has the same output as the E7's amp and measures just a tiny tick worse than the E7 in other aspects. For such a minor, minor improvement, it'd be a much cheaper option.

I've never seen a pair go for much less than $300, and I seriously doubt you could buy one and still have enough leftover cash for an E7. The PRO 900 was the first thing I thought of, but I don't see how it could work with this budget.

Did you see that the OP needs something for portable usage?

I thought he might have been saying headphones for traveling around the house and not just at his computer.

How about CALs (Creative Aurvana Live) closed headphone that can be used for traveling.

and Audio Technica ATH-AD900s (open) for use around the house and computer.

or the Senn HD-558s for use around the house and computer.

You can get the CALs and HD-558s for under $200 total.
