Brainwavz HM5 question

Thread Starter

Hi all,

I'm considering purchasing the Brainwavz HM5 but had a couple questions.

#1: My primary use for the cans will be gaming with some music listening all on my comp. I keep hearing closed cans are not recommended for gaming. What is the reason for that? Will these cans be a bad choice for my purpose?

#2: How is the bass on these cans? I understand they're neutral set and I am by no means a bass head nor will my purposes generally require much bass. But when I do listen to some music that needs it, I'd like to know that there is something there. Can anyone comment on this?

1. It has to do with the concept of soundstaging. It is basically how big of an area it sounds like the sound is coming from. This is important in FPSes for locating people.

2. Even on a bass-shy headphone, you'll know that something is there. Neutral is more than that.

Sanji, Thanks for the response.

Gotcha on the soundstage, thanks.

My understanding of neutral is that neither the highs, mids or lows is particularly accentuated, is that correct? So therefore the bass will not be dialed up and will sound more true to what the music calls for? Is this correct or am I completely wrong?

EDIT: and with regards to the soundstage aspect, would you recommend something open for gaming like the sennheiser hd 558? My one concern was I also wanted to be able to game late night without bothering anybody so I did have some concern about sound leakage.

well. not enough people have the hm5 in the possession yet. including myself.

however, they have been compared to the fa-003. and on that note. the soundstage of the fa-003 has been compared to reputable open headphones.

so you should have not worries about that. the closed hm5 should do the job. (especially since you worry about sound leakage)

I'm stoked for this set - the problem is that since so few people have them, it's hard to say how they will work for gaming. However, there is one dude over at mp4nations forum that has tried them for some gaming, and he sais they are good. But again, since they are so new, it's hard to say at this point. And even though they look like the FA-003's, we really dont know they are the same set of cans. There could have been done something to them in the process of rebranding - if they even are rebranded.

However, I've bought them and just bought the astro mixamp now. But will not be able to provide you with anything until like mid january i think. :) Anyway, since they people who have tried them praise them - im guessing they are going to be OK with gaming at the least. Maybe they even rock. So you'll have to take a chance. There are safer bets in the 139$ price range though.

Thanks Paul, if you can, please post a quick review once you get them tested out. I would be very interested in hearing about them from a few more people...

I've gotten the cans and the astro mixamp now. Just had a couple of matches yesterday. I will try to write up a detailed review after a longer time with the cans, since the soundstage is new and this is my first detailed look at a decent pair of headphones im not sure yet. But even though i just yesterday head what posiotioning and a open soundstage means, i will say HM5's have both. Anyway, they seem to be decent for gaming. I will continue to test more, please let me know if there are anything in special you want me to try. Im only playing MW3 at the moment, and the sound in that game is not that good.

I went ahead and bought them as well, they're great.

I also ordered a Auzentech X-fi forte, waiting for that to arrive...

I can't believe, even though I was one of the first who knew of the HM5s, I'm still waiting for them while many of you have already got them.

where did you order from? there were about a dozen left on amazon when I ordered. As always with amazon, i got it about 3 days later from ordering.

That's only for the previleged people in the US. It's never a fair comparison, even when the package comes from Hong Kong or Singapore to the US instead of from somewhere in the US. I was one of the first few who pre-ordered them from mp4nation. Not really complaining, just a bit too much seeing so many people get theirs first. People in Oz get everything last...

I've used my HM5 for Skyrim and they fared really well. I enjoyed using them for gaming, they have a spacious sound despite being closed. The bass is near perfect as a non-basshead.

LOL I am in Canada and my pre-order is also still in limbo. I have not seen an update on the shipping status since the 22nd. Sing post and Canada Post both just show them in transit even though are sent airmail. Guess it is the season to wait...

Kingpin, im guessing its the postal services of our local countries thats beeing slow. It was the same from me, out of Singapore the 22nd. But i feel you man! It's the worst the period you're in now. Checking the tracking a couple of times a day. Reading on the net. The wait is the worst. (Until you actually get it, then its the best). Hang in there! :)
