Burn-in. Real or not?

I don't disagree with that statement. What I disagree with is a blanket attribution, even to the audiophiles here who have stated they did not hear burn in - that they must not know how to listen, or have damaged hearing (or are lying), etc. etc.

It should be taken as a fact that some well qualified listeners hear burn in. Just as it should be taken as a fact that some do not. What we need to determine is what is going on, that allows for both of these to be true.

This is what we need to do.  To add, in order to figure out why some people hear it, and some don't.  However, in order to do this you have to accept both sides, some people hear it, some don't.  Labeling one side a placebo or a liar doesn't accept that truth, it denies it and you can't move forward.  Essentially, you dig yourself into a hole.

It's useless to argue about this IMHO. If you believe it from your experience, then it works for you. Vice versa.

What really matters is what works for YOU - whether $5 earbuds or $500 IEM's. I personally found the best (oddly and fortunately the cheapest) for my iphone 4s. I couldn't be any more happy for the couple and they just like each other.

I think the the argument has been around the wrong question, it's not does burn in happen or not.  The real question should be why do some people experience burn in and some don't.  And this answer will work for everyone.  It's not really useless, it's interesting and can actually answer some questions.

In case Liam is unaware, this is the internet.  There are tons of people who lie and have lied right here on Head Fi about products they've never used.  If Liam believes everyone on the net is trustworthy, that is his delusion.  Best to listen to users with real life experiences who know better.  ( Ya, Liam.  I am definitely giving you a taste of your own medicine in verbal form.)

I think you've entirely missed the point of my posts.

Because it's a personal experience not science-based. The personal experience can be highly subjective and psychological.

Very much so, I agree of course. Experiences are subjective, but thank the Audio Gods this is a public forum and a place for people to post their thoughts and hopefully not be crucified and branded absolutely incorrect for doing so.  Users who do that should just get out and discontinue posting. Although, I'm going to whine right now and say I really do not appreciate the past few users who are making it look like my entire point was that everyone is a liar if they don't hear and changes after some usage.  It is a result of simply being unable to read a few posts above their own.  Quite a common disease on internet forums :)

Sorry dude if my post offended you because that's not my intent. I respect yours and everyone's opinion. I have no problem with whining neither.

I should apologize and clarify. I mistakenly mis-represented swbf2cheater's position earlier regarding the statements relating to those who cannot hear burn-in being liars, damaged hearing, et al. I made it sound as though he was saying that about ALL those who have stated such, and that clearly was not his point or his intent.

Carry on. :)

It wasn't at all, I was just whining and venting about some prior posts :)

Subjective yes, psychological, not entirely...

Remember, subjective doesn't mean it's inaccurate.  It's accurate up to a point and you must trust that that person is either hearing or not hearing what he/she is saying.  Until you can literally walk into their brain and know for sure, you must trust two things:
  1. Their ears are working properly.
  2. They are hearing what they are hearing.

Calling people liars, disregarding due to psychological, mental, emotional, or even placebo effects are labels to create distrust.  Until you can trust the opposing side's observations, you really won't get anywhere in making your side of the argument stand.  When you dismiss a piece of evidence by calling it something your entire claim loses accuracy as information has be disregarded and ignored.

Suggesting that the internet is void of a small percentage of people who are trolling, lying and have no idea what the hell they are talking about is something that really concerns me.  It isn't something I would ever want to say in public, Tiny.  This is the internet...not everyone is trustworthy :)

what was this thread about again?

Well, burn-in really depends on memory and most people who don't care about burn-in can't tell. For example, you can't expect someone to tell whether a headphone "suddenly" becomes better while using it and it burns in. And someone who doesn't burn-in their headphones while not playing music won't be able to tell.
