Broke my ER4i, need ideas for new plugs - SOLVED

I'm probably not the most popular type of forum member here, because I have one question that I would like help with, and then I'll probably fade into obscurity. But I will take a chance anyway... biggrin.gif

I have had my ER4 for a couple of years, but now the cable's broke. Tried to solder it, but gave up. A bit to advance for me, with all those individually insulated cords, and I'm not that good at micro soldering. Besides I was thinking about changing them out anyway since they don't have a microphone. Could anybody please recommend something? My needs are:

1. Small enough to use underneath my motor cycle helmet without yanking them out when I put the helmet on. The cheap stuff like Koss' The Plug is useless because of that.

2. Good isolation, so I can use them when I operate power tools (I have tinnitus on my right ear, I'm very sensitive to noise like from an electrical saw and I hate wearing the large Peltor style hearing protections, so I need something that blocks it out).

3. A microphone so I can take calls without taking the phone out of my pocket.

4. Good sound, especially with human voices, but also with the potential for good bass. I listen to scientific radio shows and news when I work around the house (I'm an avid amateur carpenter, electrician and plumber), so natural voices is very important, but sometimes I listen to metal music as well, and that means that the bass has to be there.

5. Replaceable cable if possible. I have a tendency to yank the cable at times, which is why the ER4 was damaged. I normally have the cable inside the shirt, but still I manage to get it stuck on stuff here and there. So this would be a nicety, but it's not a necessity.

I have seen that the Klipsch Image S5i is available locally, but I have never heard those.

So is there anything out there that actually would work for me, or should I just get another pair of ER4 or similar and give up on most of the demands except for the good insulation and sound? Because when it comes to that my ER4 were more than good enough. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, but unfortunately those do not have a microphone for the phone. frown.gif

Actually it seems like I can get that on eBay. But they're rather expensive...

Ordered a pair from a shop very close, so I should have them tomorrow. Thanks for the tip! bigsmile_face.gif

You should get in touch with Etymotic, even if it is out of warranty. They may fix it anyway. They have great customer service.

Shipping alone will be quite expensive. I live in Norway... Anyway I really don't think that they cover wear on the cables. Never heard about anybody else covering that, at least. I have seen the prices they charge to change the cables, and I have to say you're the first I hear that call their customer service great! wink.gif But I have seen a lot of complaints...

How about an HF2 or HF3?

Thanks, but it's a bit late for that. Already ordered the Shure. It's nice to have something available locally too for a change. Maybe I can even use a warranty if something happens!

Well, first of all they don't have a replacable cable, and I have given up trying to solder them. Too small. Second I've already bought a set of plugs, which is why I put "SOLVED" in the heading... Third of all I'm a bit dumb, because they are actually ER4i, not regular ER4. I see that the 4 without the i has replaceable cables, I hadn't even seen those before...

Got the plugs today, and they sound very nice! Good bass, natural voices. Of course that only makes me wonder how good the more expensive models can be, but I'll stick with these for now. Very satisified! Again thanks for the tip, Jaqueh! Oh, and Maiden rules! Been to 8-10 concerts since around 1984, when I was 18. Took my son with me to Somewhere Back on Tour, and he's a big fan too. Traditions...

As for the isolation it's about the same as my old ER4i (which were great) since I can use the same foam plugs that I used for that. The plugs that comes with are too small (I've got big inner ears...) but I use some I bought of eBay, size large. Actually they may even be isolating a tiny bit more since the driver is covering the ear opening a bit as well.

I think what you had was the Ety ER-6i -- there is no 'i' version of the ER4.  Did they look like this?

Etymotic ER-6i Headphones

The ER4 has a black barrel body and either black or red & blue connectors, like this:

Etymotic ER-4P MicroPro™ Headphones

Anyway, glad the Shure 215 is working for you.  Be sure to remove them by the body, not pulling on the cable -- the 215 has some known cable problems, even tho it is quite thick.

I never pull the cable. But when I'm working with something it sometimes get stuck. Anyway, you're probably right, seems like they were ER6i's.

maiden have always been and always will be my favorite band, but i still haven't ever gone to a concert, mainly because most of my friends don't like metal. i did go to an opeth concert recently, and that was pretty incredible!
