Thanks Sanji, you have been extremely helpful. Same question with the Senn HD 558s (the other set i'm considering). Do you think there would be any problem with those?

Wasn't sure what to expect out of the box because of all the mixed reviews. By mixed you would see 9 that love and totally swear by Ultrasone but then there was always one troll hating on em and...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

I have a soundblaster x-fi platinum which is essentially the extreme music card paired with the 5.25 I/O drive (which does have a 1/4 headphone jack).
Probably not the best card in the world for listening, I may need to upgrade. Any idea on if it can power HM5's? Some sources i read say the I/O drive does amplify a bit but some say it doesn't at all.
Almost all sound cards can work with headphones in the 25-Ohm to 60-Ohm range.

The HD 558s will be fine out of that sound card.
Also, I would not safely say that any headphone in the 25 to 60 ohm range can be powered by a lower end sound card. Everything Hifiman is low impedance, but very difficult to drive. The K701 has an impedance of 62 ohms, but is a difficult to drive headphone. The Audeze LCD-2 has an impedance of 50 ohms, but is quite amp dependent.
Impedance is hardly an end-all metric on the difficulty of powering a headphone.
