Need more impressions about FireStone Audio Fubar 4

So I finally found for the DAC+Amp I was looking for! It meets all my conditions: has optical in, large stereo jack out. Even more, it also has an AMP!

After having searched the Forum for quite a bit, I haven't found enough data about this device. One member seems happy while another member (leeperry) seems to say that Fubar sucks.

But I haven't found any other optical-in & decent price DAC here in Sweden (since I don't want anything over 300 Euro).

Well, I have been using the Furbar III MKII DAC headphone amp for several months. It is satisfactory. However, I had to ductape the blinding blue front-panel LED. It is more than bright even with the tape cover.

yeah my fubar II blue led was crazy bright.

more than twice as bright as other blue led's that ive read people complain about.

why is it so bright!?!?!

I owned the Fubar III briefly and the Fubar II dac about 3 years ago and while I enjoyed the sound initially, I was blown by better equipment down the upgrade path.

It's a good place to start but I felt it was a bit thin and compressed sounding.

Exemplify. What equipment?

Bump.

If you're going to buy it now, I think there's very little reason not to get the 4-Plus version instead because currently (xmas campaign) it sells for 170 euros (until the stock is gone, original price 325).

The lack of user experiences here is one reason why I still can't convince myself that it is good value especially for that price. Also I'm concerned about two issues mentioned for example in this review below: on/off switch makes "pop" sound when disengaged and the hissing with low-ohm headphones.

Review (besides those issues otherwise pretty positive): http://www.touchmyapps.com/2009/12/17/firestone-fubar-iv-headphone-ampdac-in-review/

I think the weak point was the amp, as I owned a Fubar II and while it wasn't the best sound, it was still passable for it's price point.

I upgraded to a Keces 151 Dac and Little Dot I+ amp and that combo suited me well for 2 years until I got a DACmini.

I also had the time to use some (not all) of this equipment with a DacMagic, uDac, EF2A, Icon Mobile, Beresford, TTVJ Slim amp and still in the end, I felt there was something off about the Fubar series.  They're "cute" little amps, but I feel for 200 dollars you should roll the dice with other offerings that are out there (Little Dot, Fiio, etc.)
