You may be skeptical about my take on the Philips SHE3580

But one thing I will stand by unequivocally is that the tips for the Philips (pictured in my avatar) have until now fitted me ten times better than the tips for the Ety ER-4Ps. It's not that I can't get a seal with the Etys; whether using the supplied tri-flanges, foamies or aftermarket Comply foam, I get a good seal; but tri-flanges invade my ear, while the foamies and comply must be rolled up before insertion. Then too, the foamies tend to de-core themselves over time, while the Complys keep their shape a bit too well, in that they start to push against my ear canal after a while. Unlike the Philips tips, Complys are a one-size-fits-all affair (well there are extra large Complys but I want smaller than standard).
The small Philips tips just pop in my ear, no muss no fuss.
Today I decided to try fitting the Philips tips on the Etys, using the complys as an adapter of sorts. First I tried trimming down the foam, thinking that I will need some foam to expand and keep the large inner diameter Philips tips (the Philips SHE3580's tube is Comply T-400 sized, while the Etys use T-100) from falling off. But after trimming more than half the foam off, the Philips tips still won't go on. So I just pulled out all the foam, leaving only the bit that's stuck directly on the core with glue, and tried putting on the Philips tips again... this time they fit perfectly! And now the Etys fit my ear perfectly too!
With this Franken-tip I get just as good a seal as with the tri-flange and I notice no loss of bass. These Philips single flange tips are also longer than average and just cover the whole tube with a bit of tip jutting out, just like the Complys themselves.
So, if you're like me and find the tips on larger dynamic IEMs more comfortable than those for tiny-tube (T100) BA IEMs, get a pack of Comply and a pair of Philips SHE3580 and you can try this for yourself! The Comply are good tips in their own right and the SHE3580 are cheap enough to buy just for their tips, and you may find them good enough to use as beater phones. As for me, I like the SHE3580 so much that the Etys didn't have a chance stealing earshare from them until I did this mod. The bass and treble extension, detail retrieval, soundstage, fit and comfort... all either just as good or better than the etys. Now the Etys may just have a fighting chance against the $10 SHE3580
But the Philips still have the last laugh as the Etys had to borrow their tips just to be in the running
(perhaps the stock foamies would also work. But from my memory, they tend to de-core with the foam coming off completely and the remaining tube would be too thin to fit T-400 size tips. Of course, you can also try this with T-100 Complys and any number of other brands of T-400 sized silicon tips.)
