Sennheiser HD 25-1 II: Where's the treble?

I just got my much-anticipated HD 25-1 II's and I'm rather disappointed.  The bass is smooth and powerful, but they are so dark-sounding that I can't believe they are so highly regarded among headphone aficionados.  The highs are recessed and distant, and can only be brought forward by equalization.  That's not a problem when I'm listening on a computer, but my portable DAP player lacks any kind of tone controls and the sound using the Sennheisers is disappointing.

 

I've read on some of the forums that the sound quality of some headphones, including these, changes on burn-in.  Is that true? By what mechanism does that occur?  Is the sound of my Sennheisers likely to improve, or am I going to have to send them back?  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Treble isn't everything.  Especially not to us HD25 fans, lol.

 

If you want bright, clear treble then get Beyerdynamic, AKG, or Audio-Technica headphones instead.

Just send it back if you dont like it, burn in is not going to make them sound different. IMO highs are not distant, they are recessed but not distant at all, senn hd 25 1 has no soundstage. 

 

Edit: If you wanted sparkle in the highs what made you buy senn hd 25 1 in the first place ?

My previous headphones were Sennheiser HD-414s and their sound was great, except for weak bass performance.  I had hoped the HD-25s would fill in the bass gap without other parts of the audio spectrum suffering!

 

If I send these back, other models I was considering were Sennheiser PX200-II, AKG K181DJ, maybe one of the Grados.  I'm looking for something that's portable, comfortable, and not lacking in bass OR treble.  Price should be $200 or less.
