Headphones and Modmic

Hello Head-Fi!

So I'm looking at adding a Modmic [modmic.com] to a headset that I have on order, the Fischer Audio FA-011. I realize that the magnet in something like the Modmic won't be anything as strong as say a rare-earth magnet, but could a magnetic device that close to the drivers cause the headphones to lose audio quality and/or possible damage the internals? I'm getting the headset first and foremost for music and gaming on my laptop, as well as possibly some movie watching on my laptop and I wanted to make sure that this route would be a safe way to go before purchasing the mic. I know many here love the Zalman clip mic but for me clip mics have never really worked well enough. The cans will probably be running off the Fiio E10 or something similar so I can travel with it and use it in hotels and such while on the road, if that has any impact.

So, introduction time. I'm finally getting around to registering on head-fi after lurking for a while. I want to thank all of the wonderful people in this community for investing so much time and attention to detail in their reviews. It's great to have this kind of resource available for someone just starting to get into mid-end audiophile equipment. I'm a graduate with a degree in electronic media specializing in audio engineering (ADR) and I'm currently working as a tier 3 technician for a national cable telecom company. Nice to meet everyone!

Hey Axel, (mostly lurking here as well but figured I must pipe in when it's a matter of answering such a question) we haven't had a complaint about the magnet interfering with the drivers/sound. Our in-house listener-blinded study didn't find any difference with or without the magnet --granted, we didn't do an exhaustive test on every pair of headphones-- nor have we had a complaint about sound being altered by the magnet (which is a neodymium magnet). Ask or PM me if you have any other questions.

Hello Axel,

I recently picked up a ModMic that I paired with my new HARX900's.

I did not notice any change in sound quality myself when attaching the magnet.

Beyond that, I really really prefer the ModMic to the zalman clip on, be it personal preference or whatever, I really love the thing.

The magnet design is pretty genius to me. I would say clarity/quality wise it beats the zalman by allot. I like that if I don't want to use it its super super simple to take off, or move out of the way and not have to deal with the cable, or it being clipped to my cable.

Obviously this is all colored by my opinion, and personal taste so take it with a grain of salt, but I love the ModMic.

I have gotten allot of comments about how much better I sound/quieter everything else is ( normal sounds like people talking a couple feet away are not present mostly, if my speakers are in use, but on a lower setting (maybe 1/5-1/4) its either barely audible, or not present. Music at those ranges or slightly higher is audible, but quieter, likewise game/tv shows. Overall I am happy with the suppression).

Hope this helps!
