Investing into a decent portable

Currently own a clip+ (rockboxed) and a pair of ATH-ES7's looking at a DAC/AMP in one sold by fiio and the TMA-1's. Any recommendations on a amp or a DAP to upgrade to instead? Will the TMA-1's need amp'ing off a clip+?

TMA-1's won't need amping from the Clip+. They will "improve" a bit when amped though but nothing spectacular. The Clip+ sounds pretty good and you can adjust the sound to your liking with Rockbox's excellent EQ. And trust me, when you're getting the TMA-1 you're gonna use that EQ a lot. ;)

If you ever feel like you wanna try out an amp and don't want to shell out the big bucks, go check out the Zo2. Looks like a promising little critter. I still swear by my Headstage Arrow though.

I think the only real "upgrade" over the Clip+'s SQ is something like the C30 or T51. Or perhaps "audiophile" players like the HM6xx/HM801 series, although I don't have much faith there. For reference, I sold my Sony X1050 in favor of the Clip+. Just couldn't justify the cost/SQ.
