Closed Back Headphones - which do t leak sound?

Hi guys,

pretty much as the title says, I am looking for a pair of closed back headphones which do not leak sound and ideally restrict the amount of ambient outside noise getting  in. These will be used in close proximity to other people, who would usually be watching TV.

i do have a pair of Denon AH-D2000's and whilst these are good headphones they do still leak sound quite a bit.

I am looking for a pair of headphones that have an open and detailed sound, with good bass, although I am not a bass Head and I am looking for punchy bass.

Can anybody make any recommendations as to suitable headphones that meet this criteria? My musical tastes are varied and include mainly rock and indie, female vocals and accoustic guitars.....pretty much anything from the 60's thought to present day, except classical or opera.

I would be willing to look at paying up to probably £350.00 and would look at second hand in good condition.

Please help guys.

Heya,

Isolation, comfort, punch. Makes me think of a Beyer DT770 for you. Another option, the Ultrasone PRO 650. And also the AudioTechnica A900X.

Very best,

Hi MalVeaux,

I respect your opinion very highly, as you seem best able to translate your listening experiences into words that I can relate to with some consistency.  I love my D5000, just to help you understand my overall preference.   At work, I am currently listening to music through an iPod LOD-out to a HeadRoom Micro Amp driving a pair of Audio-Technica M50s.  I am happy with this setup, but if the DT-770 (250Ω) is comparable in sound isolation and leakage, and my Micro Amp is up to the task, are they significantly better in your opinion?  How is the sub-bass compared to the M50, or even the D5000 for that matter?  How bright are they in comparison to your SR60i, as I have a pair of SR80i's that I find a bit too bright for all but low-volume, background listening?

Sorry Jason36 for stepping on your thread a bit, but hopefully my reply will generate more interest and any answers to my questions might be helpful in your search as well. smily_headphones1.gif

My pair's still on the way from Russia (thanks to GD Audiobase.....) , but I've tested an associate's Fischer Audio FA-003 thoroughly and think it would be just right for you. Its mids shine with vocals, it sounds very open and has a great soundstage, and while it is a neutral can the bass still is very punchy and nice. Though it's not officially known if the FA-003 and the Brainwavz HM5 are the same headphone, the Brainwavz HM5 has been reviewed to have almost the exact same type of sound at a bit cheaper, and you can buy it without fear of a two-month waiting period and not hearing back from the seller after repeated emails (again, thanks to GD Audiobase).

Best of all for your purposes, the can is built almost like an earmuff. It is large and doesn't leak a bit, and my associate uses them to listen to music in bed and his wife never hears a thing.

Sincerely,

Heya,

I consider the DT770 better than the M50, but some like the M50 better. It's preference really. The DT770 is just more comfortable and has a better sound stage, otherwise, great sub bass, good mid bass, good mids, and nice sparkly treble. Getting that with velour pads is just great. So if comfort & sound stage are important to you for long listening, then yes, it's significantly better. For pure sonic comparison, they're not that different, rather similar, so not a significant sonic upgrade from that stand point. The D5000 has better sub-bass, better everything really, other than isolation. The DT770's are not super bright, but they're bright. I didn't have issues with sibilance, it wasn't harsh either, just a little bright with some sparkle (a lot like how Denon does it really). The SR60's are very forward, they attack your ears. Few headphones have the raw energy that a Grado brings to your head.

Very best,
