Alternates to D2000s? - Page 2

I bought mine used for an absolutely stupid price that was too good to pass up. Glad I didn't at this point. Number of hours? Unknown. Take previous hours + my own hours (there's at least 4 hours per day, if not more, playing through my D5k's per day). But I also have them playing even when I'm not actively wearing them. I have a dual setup so two headphones play at once, and I generally swap between two throughout my sessions.

Very best,

Very best,

The denon 5000s are a remarkable pair of headphones. As you can tell from my avatar I modded mine into open-back headphones and that alone has taken them up to a whole new level. They are absolutely amazing with this mod and the mod can be easily tested and is non-permanent if you wanted to just test it out (of course I couldn't go back to stock after being spoiled :) DAKmart has refurbished Denon 5000s for about $380.00 and if you are in the USA just pick up a square trade warranty (up to 2 years) for cheap and save money while getting quality.

If you like the sound signature of Denons - go for it!  I personally like Denons, but I like other headphones even more.  Denons seem to have too narrow soundstage for me and I don't quite like their bass. However maybe I've never heard them in Denon-optimized system. Overall they are really lovely headphones if you can appreciate their sound characteristics.

The most important thing ever is to listen before you buy!

After the mod the sound stage is huge, bass is super tight and still maintains that impact, mids come to life and open up. Treble becomes very airy (reminds me of EX1000). These drivers were meant to breathe (what were you thinking denon :).

The question is, if the OP is ready to experiment with any mods, esp such a radical one:)

I would really love to listen to your modded semi-open Denons - this mod had to change a lot in their sound!

Yeah the sound change is drastic. I can't say its semi-open though; they are actually open cans now lol. I had another headfier drill my cups 2 inches in diameter and he used a fabric for the grill. May not be as nice as it can be (I am eventually gonna sand them and re-stain them for perfection but I'm not concerned with that at all ATM). But to test the mod you don't have to drill wholes in your cups. You can just unscrew the cups place them on the side, unclip the ear pads from the frame and just let them rest against the frame instead of being locked in place (this will tighten the bass significantly and give the headphones speed). If you don't like how it sounds then just clip the pads back into place after putting the cups back on and no harm done :). I actually would have sold my Denon 5000s if not for this mod. The Denon 5000s naturally have more sub bass than the Denon 2000 and 7000s and have less mid bass. They also don't suffer the recessed mid-range like the 2000 and 7000 do. So the mod really suites the 5000s well (even the 2000s) as that extra sub bass becomes more focused and detailed. I find myself focusing and appreciating how low the bass goes instead of being irritated by the boominess (that was more so on bass heavy genres).

Why no HE-300?  Wasn't it a very competitive mid-fi headphone?

Also consider the Beyerdynamic DT880 600ohm which is IMO a very good mid-fi can.  Greatly prefer it over the HD6X0 as it actually had some excitement...

That's interesting! I may try it on my D2000 one day.

Sell the idea to Denon!:)

I didn't come up with the idea so that wouldn't be right lol. But I'm glad to have positively benefited from the mod non-the-less.
