Alternates to D2000s?

Thread Starter

I've been researching headsets in the $250-350 price range, and the one headset most users recommend is the AD-D2000.  However, since it was discontinued its price shot up to exactly $350, so for that price I figure I might be able to get a better pair of headphones. I've been looking at the following:

D2000- $350

HD650- $350

AKG K702- $250

AKG Q701- $250

Beats Pro- $250 (on sale- half off)

I'm upgrading from a set of foam-modded HD555s because I want better bass in my music overall, these will be used for a mixture of many kinds of music (rock, pop, metal, electronic, etc) .  I know the Beats in that list is pretty unpopular here because for $500 they are a rip off, but for half price I'm not so sure- are the D2000s and the 650s worth the $100 difference over them and the AKGs? And if they are, which should I pick?  The discussions I've found over this all assume the D2000s can be found for around $200-250, which unfortunately isn't the case anymore.  Would you all please help me with my decision?  Thanks!

don't get beats pro. even for half off, you can better way better quality from hd 650s or akgs. i recommend the hd 650s for the bass. its not bass HEAVY like the beats. its just slightly less than what the beats pro has to offer. however, the bass has very nice texture and goes quite deep with great extension and control. its a very enjoyable headphone that works with almost any genre of music and will scale up nicely as you upgrade your system. it was my first audiophile headphone and still among my favorite. <3 <3 <3

you can't go wrong with hd 650s.

the akgs are nice and detailed, they are neutral and have a huge soundstage. the bass is very tight and clean but would be considered "weak" by many people. if you're looking for more bass than the hd 555s, the akgs aren't for you.

Heya,

If you're looking for increased bass, I think the K/Q 701/2 will likely not fill your needs, they are not bassless, but they're not strong on bass either. The D2000 has excellent sub-bass. The HD650 is relatively bassy, but doesn't have the sub-bass slam of the D2000. If you have an amplifier that is capable of adequately driving the HD650, it would be an excellent way to go if you want a laid back sound.

Also consider the Beyer DT990 and Ultrasone PRO 650/750.

Lastly, an alternate to the D2000 is to simply step up to the D5000.

Very best,

Very best,

i agree with you on the sub-bass part. the hd 650s have good subbass, but not the same as the denons. either way, its still VERY good.

the beyerdynamic have more bass than the hd 650s but it doesn't extend as deep, nor is it as well controlled.

ultrasones have alot of midbass, not as much sub-bass. great for electronic music.

Wow, those responses were really quick! You guys are awesome! :D  As of right now, I'll take your recommendations and get the HD650 with a nice amp, though you do bring up a great point re. the D5000s MalVeauX.  I'm going to compare those two, though since I see you have both, how much better do you think the D5000s are? How does their sound compare?

its different, but overall value. its  probably better for you to get hd 650s + good amp than d5000s without an amp.

its all about how much money you got to spend. denon d5000 are alot more expensive than hd 650s and require an amp as well.

I was considering getting either of those two along with a Fiio E7+E9, do you think they'd be enough to run them? Or, should I look into another dac+amp combination?

Thanks again for your help! I really appreciate it. :)

Edit: I haven't purchased the Fiio amp+dac yet, so if they aren't good enough it's not too terrible, I can afford to spend a little more on it if need be or if there is another product significantly better in the same general price range.  I'm currently researching the E10, though I haven't found its corresponding desktop pc version like the E7 does

I own the d2000 and the hd650.  D2000 sounds better with an amp and hd650 needs an amp.

I use a HRT MS II into a Maverick A1 integrated amp and am please with the set up.

I love my d2000 for electronica, house, down tempo, and hip hop.  I use my hd650 for everything else... They sound awesome with my hi Rez 24/96 music.

IMHO In the $300-400 range the 650 is better price to performance but a good amp is needed.

I haven't heard them, but these sound promising if you want good bass:

There are some good reviews on other headphones and the Fiio products on Headfonia.

e10 wouldn't be as good as a e7/e9 combo. im sure you will be fine with the e7 and e9 for hd 650s. before i got my WA6SE, i had a pro-ject headbox se II amp which had really good synergy with the hd 650s, but there are better options in that price range such as the little dot mk III or the schiit asgard/valhalla.

@phatoldsun- Those look cool, the only reason i'm hesitant about them is that so few people have used them on here- while the D2000, D5000 and HD650 are known good products, the Pro700s are relatively unknown and I don't know of any place I can take them for a test listen (B&H is OOS, and I prefer dealing with them)

Everything I've seen does point to the HD650 being the best in its price range. Right now, I'm just considering whether the D5000s are worth the jump in price- I'll have a test listen in a few days, though since there are people on these forums that know a lot more about this than I do, I do appreciate input regarding this choice.

I think I'll be listening to a mixture of the Beatles, Queen, Foo Fighters, Muse, Led Zep, Daft Punk and Deadmau5 (around even), in case it makes a large difference.

Thanks again for the input guys! I know I sound like a broken record repeating that, but I do appreciate it :)

Edit to avoid double posting, since Dubstep Girl submitted while I was writing the above up:

So I'll definitely get the E7+E9, and either the 650s or the d5000s.. Still researching that haha.  Thanks a lot!

On an unrelated note, I looked up those amps you linked to... wow, the wa6se looks amazing.. some day i'll get it, eventually :)

Hd 650s are the better all arounders. Deadmau5 on D2000 is so fun though normal_smile%20.gif

@phatoldsun- yeah, It does sound like the better choice for that kind of music. I'm really basing the choice of the d5000 over the d2000 on a review on here by user "Skylab", though i'm still not 100% positive- more like 85% haha.  As of right now, I think I'll wind up getting them along with the E7+E9, which should be a great upgrade to my current modded HD555s and Asus Xonar_DG 5.1 sound card.

Heya,

Depends on what you want to hear.

I prefer the D5000 greatly to the HD650.

The HD650 is boring to me. That's not to say it's bad, it's excellent. But it has very little sparkle, none, it's very smoothed out, no edges any where, just mellow sound coming from it. It's a good easy listener. But that's not what I want. I like energetic sparkly headphones that can pound you and then get soft and then pound you again. The D5000 does that. The range on it is superb, it's comfortable, and you don't need heavy amplification, as it's designed to run on NO amplification and sounds great right out of a portable player, though I amp mine unless I'm using it portable and honestly it doesn't make a big difference and I've tried several of my amps on it. The HD650 on the other hand really needs a lot of power to sound it's best, so expect to pay handsomly for an amplifier capable of that (the E9 will power it sufficiently, but not fully, the HD650 can take a lot more juice and it scales the higher you go). Anyhow, I like the D5000 more, it has that sparkle, that edge, that impact, that boom, and great mids. The HD650 sounds great, but it's just less fun to listen to in my situation.

MalVeauX-  That's exactly the kind of review that I really wanted to hear to help me make up my decision, I'll almost certainly get the D5000s now.  Thanks a lot! I greatly appreciate it.

I liked my D5000's from hours 100-500. Absolutely adored them at 1,000-1,500. From there, all the way to 1,900 hours, it was true love. wink.gif How many hours do you have on yours now?
