Gaming/music headphones

Thread Starter

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get my brother a pair of headphones for christmas. He has two main uses for them, 1) computer gaming and 2) music at home and when he goes on business trips.

For computer gaming, he plays League of legends most of the time (similar to warcraft) but also plays Call of Duty and a couple other games once in a while. He currently is not using a soundcard, just the built in one on the mother board.

For music, he likes all kinds of music but mostly rock and alternative. I would like a pair that has decent noise cancelling for plane trips but doesn't need to have active noise cancelling.

Price range is around $150.

Therefore, I need a pair for:

-computer gaming (Lol, CoD)

-no sound card currently (open to getting an amp or sound card if that is the better way to go)

-detachable mic (for use on business trips)

-rock and alternative music

-Price range: $150

If you guys could help me out that would be great. Thanks guys

The Mad Lust Envy thread is a good place to start. (Only bringing this up because you mentioned Call of Duty; were it League of Legends alone, I don't think synergy with Dolby Headphone or CMSS-3D Headphone or similar binaural surround filters would matter much, just clean sound quality.)

However, there's a lot of open models mixed in with closed ones, and some of them do require amplification to sound their best...though the bigger issue at hand is that a lot of the headphones mentioned exceed a $150 budget, though not all. (Welcome to Head-Fi; sorry about your wallet.) If anything, it's the requirement for isolation during plane trips that complicates things immensely; a lot of the well-regarded headphones around here are open designs, which have practically no isolation as you'd expect. Noise in, noise out.

For the mic, the ModMic should take care of that quite easily.

Getting a set of audiophile heapdhones and using a Zalman clip on looks best

Now we get into open or closed headphones. closed would isolate the sound.however open has a bigger soundstge. meaning he can hear, how far away the person is, how close they are, and exactly where they are. they can't be used in public though.

Reading through some of the threads about gaming headphones, a couple of choices seemed to be mentioned several times

Samsung sr850 + fiio e10 amp

ad700's (people say they have less bass)

sennheiser hd5xx's

The reason why I added in the plane listening capability was for added functionality. The phones will be used for gaming 80-90% of the time but for that off chance they could be used while on business then that would be a bonus.

Mainly, need these for pc gaming and pc music listening.

Also, some detachable mic suggestions would be nice.

Samson SR850. not samsung. and yes, i hear they are good too they are mad cheap. the reason they are good is due to their brightness, and soundstage(open design) they aren't perfect but for the price, very good. :)

I have one of these, really is quite useless. Nothing you can attach it to, my lips practically have to be touching the mike for it to be heard, which makes it sound quite poor. The sound i can get out of it when not isnt so bad, but the fact that i literally had to pick it up and put it to my mouth made it quite a wastefull investment for me. ($10 not investment but still)

my bad about the samson, must be the asian in me.

I'm an econ major and always try to find the most bang for the buck which is why I like the idea of getting the samson's. my brother is not an audiophile so minimal differences wont matter much. the budget was more of an indication of quality vs actual price since I figured $150 was a good price point that captured a lot of options.

I use the same zalman clip mic and don't have any trouble with it. Though admittedly most cables are a tight fit for the clip it works. Mine rests on my shoulder and I am told it sounds nice and clear.

Hmm, ill have to try a different software or something of the sort. Because even if i had it on my collar, for it to pick me up in that spot was impossible, shouting only barely worked.
