Integrity of animu huh? It's all in good fun, what's wrong with a lil moeblob every now and again. Anyway, boy was the original broadcast of Haruhi a lot of fun, well it was anyway til Haruhi mania took over and everyone was loathe to associate with it.

See exhibit A:

Best thing ever, or worst? You be the judge

I'm a little over exaggerating the whole moe hate thing. But that doesn't matter, because every community has its need for someone telling everyone how the system is breaking down.

I personally don't think that moe is something like the first horseman of the anime apocalypse.
A lot of new shows are overdoing it, but it's pretty easy to avoid these infected shows.
I don't know much about how anime changed over the years, but I can't imagine that there was soooo much less moe involved in anime 15-20 years ago.
Maybe the cancer already grew too big in me, but I can't imagine a world without moe anime :P
I'm also not sure if the world would be a better place without them. It can't possibly be that all the moe anime studios suddenly start producing incredible and innovative anime once the moe phase is over.

Was there really that much hype around Haruhi?
All I know is that I'm really enjoying it so far :)

It was pretty huge back in the day!

I think you'll really like the movie, it's one of my favourite anime movies.

Yeah the movie is much more somber in tone and theres a strong focus on Kyon, so it's pretty great. Haruhi as a series was great cause it's quite adept at juggling multiple genres and moods, and it featured a memorable cast. The WTF factor of the original broadcast was pretty high; it's definitely one of my favorite series

Is there something like a unoriginal broadcast?
And what is it with people debating about the order of the episodes?
So far, this anime has a pretty clear timeline IMO.

Sir you have not exaggerated it enough.

Keep up the good work.

I think you might be watching it in the new chronological order. When the series first aired it was completely jumbled up, and the very first episode (0) actually took place towards the very end of the series. Just for reference, the true final episode of the show aired towards the middle. It was very weird for the time and prompted a lot of discussion as to what the hell was goin on. I personally prefer the original broadcast order as it made the show more interesting at the time. Played in straight order, kinda takes away from the WTF factor a bit I feel, again, it's one of those, "you had to have been there" kinda things

Okay, that explains things...I guess.
Seems like I'm watching it in the "correct" order even though

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
it was kind of odd that the whole world almost got undone and replaced on episode 5.
That came a bit out of the blue.
Was a really cool episode btw....

Mushishi is great!

The whole concept of the mushi is really interesting.
Artstyle is like a slightly lower budget version of your usual Gibli movie.
The characters are really fascinating. This is a strictly episodic anime so you won't get to see 99% of the people again, but quiet a few of these characters are a lot more memorable than some supporting characters of 26+ episode animes.
It's a really quiet anime, set in a really interesting world with a perfectly fitting artstyle and loads of memorable characters. Oh and it is usually more sad than cheerful.

Nice. I'll look into it.

My Amazon MP3s are all like V6 or something like that, whatever 142 kbps is.

Dang, these are actually really nice!

Ecchi and Moe don't instantaneously equal bad series, but the show has a lot steeper path to work up to a favorite than something without said fanservice.

Not to say I like kyoukai no kanata, but it's moe and I'm watching it. And I'm watching IS2 this season too. Instead of getting mad at it for having a terrible lack of plot, I just laugh at how horribly bad it was done.

Does anyone ever do that? Watch something because they know it's bad, and then laugh at it?

I can't resist!

If you think monogatari series does not have a lot of moe and fanserivce then you probably have gotten used to the cancerous state of a large part of currently airing anime. Booh mechy, booh.

You are now officially among the ranks of people who see moe as a good thing, meaning you are among the people who (in my eyes) invite mediocrity into an otherwise good medium.

It's interesting how you're defending the integrity of anime as a medium, as it implies that you view anime as an art form. I don't totally disagree with you, but lets be realistic, anime, like all other forms of entertainment, is a product.

You remind me of the music 'fans' that listen to mostly classical rock, and how they schiit on fans of other music genres, such as modern pop/rap, and going on to say that pop/rap isn't real music or other such nonsense. It's interesting seeing the similarities between 'music fans' and 'anime fans (watchers?)', and that's strange, because you don't really see this type of behaviour from fans of other entertainment media, like film for example.

When's the last time you heard someone say "GRR, COMEDY MOVIE FANS ARE CORRUPTING THE FILM INDUSTRY". And yet, we both see it all the time when people are talking about how moe is destroying anime.

Even here on head-fi, many people have this strange emotional attachment to gear, and when other people speak ill of that persons' favourite headphone/amp, they take it as if it was a personal attack, it's crazy!

And yeah, I know I'm kind of generalising a little, but you get my point.

Arrghhh, I need a drink. (even in scotch, people are like "lol you drink Johnnie Walker/blended scotch?, you're such a pleb with cheap taste")

G44

THE GENERAL ACCEPTANCE OF TOXIC BEHAVIOUR IN HOBBIES HAS LEFT ME IN DESPAIR!

That's the whole reason I watched the Air and Clannad movies. Gather some mates up, watch some horrible schiit, and start picking it apart. Hilarity ensues. Sometimes it's much more entertaining and funny than a proper comedy show or just flatout more fun than a really really good series.

I agree with everything you said! Very well spoken rant!

Although modern rock isn't killing off this generation, the dynamic range compression is killing off their ears.

Yup. Everyone needs one of these folks:

Who is the person in the background though? Deadlyloli?

I think the movie is really good, but

Steins;Gate x Haruhi spoilers! (Click to show)
After seeing Steins;Gate pull off a much deeper level of time manipulation, I fear I may not enjoy the movie as much as I once did right after watching the series, back in the early days of my anime career.

Yup, stop where you're at and go watch the show in broadcast order.

The episode 0 gives a pretty nice description of the characters before they're actually explained. Not only that, but it leaves the climax of the series for the last episode, whereas in chronological order it's around episode 8...

Yep, that's chronological order. In the OG broadcast, that was the final episode. The chronological final episode that you're gonna see is gonna be boring as **** lol

Mechy - And yes, S;G handles the themes in the Haruhi movie better, but that's what you get with increased runtime - more time to flesh out character interactions. In any case, I can't flippin wait for the S;G movie

True true. Still though, they were able to do many more layers to the theme. Oh well, both are still excellent.

Neither can I! I need to order all the Steins;gate OPs/EDs sometime in the future to go with my copy of the Japanese blu ray! :D

That was the final episode?!
Dayum.
What were they thinking when they came up with all these different orders?!

Oh and I guess it's to late for me to watch the first season in broadcast order.
I'll do that with the second one.
