http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21579462-almost-unnoticed-un-about-fight-its-first-war-gamble-worth-taking-art

The U.N is about to "fight its first war". This is the first war where the U.N will personally command troops using their own officers and what not. The troops are of course from member states. They will be under the U.N banner and are being sent into Congo to stop Congo rebels who are currently raping, pillaging, and destroying.

The question remains of how effective this will be, and if the U.N has the ability to do this, and the ultimate question is if it is even a good idea for the U.N to have its own 'wars' in a sense.

Either way, I'm interested in seeing how this will turn out. The Congo rebels obviously couldn't understand fancy words in a fancy envelope sent to them with strong words telling them to stop. A few fancy U.N marked AK-47's shoved at them may be a better language to speak.

The UN has troops?

I thought they just had other people send their troops to do schiit for them.

I already said that they didn't.

Yes, they have member states that send members. They ask, and some send.

Yo people. Started watching Genshiken yesterday so I can catch up for the new season. As most of my friends told me it would be, it's pretty damn awesome.

I had the opinion that Psycho Pass had the greatest single character development, a woman even, I’ve seen in a long time in Akane. Started out timid and not confident with herself, was put into a situation where it changes her world, “mope” a bit before gathering enough wit to start recover, another bit of revelation then became a somewhat seasoned, slightly pragmatic person in the end.

What's yours?

Valvrave went from one of the shows I least wanted to click on to watch to the one I wanted to the most

It jacks 80% of its stuff from Code Geass. However its using little things now to do even more twists. It feels like a Mahou Shoujou Madoka where they gave you a VERY generic setting place. But are then changing everything you know about it.

It's a space action sci fi mecha with dark twists, secrets and themes.

I still rage 40% of the time at the holes in how the world works though

I thought it was quite normal. The character development. But then again, very few anime take it so far as to go from a poor young calf to a grown up one.

I agree, very few other anime's have shown me a woman where I actually felt her developing. But then again, in terms of relating this to books and novels. It's nothing special. But in anime, I would say that it is indeed something.

Going along that line of thought.

Renton Thurston of Eureka Seven

had also some pretty good character development.

It was quite solid. Not close to my best character developments but don't get me wrong, it was good. I just wish Psycho-Pass did more future social commentary and less of the crazy plot they put together towards the end. It was pretty good for me but I enjoyed the earlier vibe better.

I'm really conflicted with what to think about Valvrave and the ending to the newest episodes.

It could be the worst good thing to do or otherwise.

Most anime's that do this

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

do it to get a rise out of people. Because they are so pissed that they like the series more. Etc Etc.

Not sure how to feel about how they did.

This news should have come earlier... I'm already set for Thailand this year. I could have made a stop at Japan dammit. Discount agents with low low prices and no changes or cancellations else we take all your money and tell you to file system check off.

Hope it lasts until next year. Seems like a long term program.

Also bowei, off the top of my head, I can remember that the UN peacekeeper corp were deployed to Bosnia during 90s, because Malaysia sent some of its troops there.

The UN was deployed to many places.

This will be their first 'war' though. In all other instances. They were just member states under the UN banner but under the leadership of their own leaders.

This time will be the first time the U.N themselves are actually leading the troops and doing everything. They will be the ones dropping bombs, shooting artilery, etc etc

Oh I see. This is not just a peacekeeping mission then, more like a peace restoring war. That's kind of an oxymoron. Look it up kids, that is a real word.

This is the big problem.

The U.N for the first time is not just rallying troops but are commanding them themselves. The question thus is if this will change anything, if they are able to effectively do this and if its a good idea.

Because essentially, the peace assembly unit of the world for world discussion and democratic solutions is now personally going to 'war'.

I do not know enough about the Congo rebel situation to tell you if its real peacekeeping or whatever. The congo rebels have been doing stuff so terrible in Congo that even their former allies stopped help recently due to how inhumane they were. Various nearby nations are sending troops to be adorned under U.N logo's and to be newly commanded by U.N officers for the first U.N led war.

This could be dangerous. It can be seen to some as the U.N testing their officers and 'training' in an isolated situation.

To me, as of right now. No warning bells are going off. But of course, only time will tell
