Gawd. Darn. School. Crams all hell. Right before ap exams. Hate how English is so subjective that your teacher gives you a 50 on a project you actually tried or if she just doesn't like you. I would tear down the way English is taught in the country. We don't need old-timer books like "The Great Gatsby" or some meaning behind a green light. We don't need books that symbolize so much of the past (there's a reason why there's something by the name US History). We need grammar if anything. The course is named English Language ffs. I understand the importance of such books like "The Jungle" or "The Scarlet Letter", but they really should be moved to a separate course. I understand Theodore Roosevelt read "The Jungle". However, they touch on it briefly in US History and actually make the ties that matter. Not some interpretations that are so very subjective to the point of where you can not grade them.
I actually made a decent test (project was to make a test in AP format). When she gave a practice test for everyone after that, all the kids failed (with no curve). Answer key was terrible. The explanations were god awful. Those that got higher than an 85 were presumed to be cheating and were thus failed. A girl I know had to prove that she didn't cheat. Luckily, she had a copy of it in one of her binders and that she went to a prep place/printed it out online to practice.
If anything, they should move that stuff to English IV literature.
No wonder why people can't spell or punctuate correctly on a daily bases.
If only things were like math and science. Right or wrong. Clear cut.
