I wish. I only know a few phrases, ding2! The HK Student Association club at the UW held a few Cantonese lessons.....but then midterms came around and I only got to go to half of the meetings. Having 6 tones instead of 4 like in Mandarin is pretty hard for me.
My grandparents are from Toisan [Taishan; not Tai Shan, panda], so their dialect is more similar to Cantonese than Putonghua. My parents can speak it, but our generation can't.....as is the way of us 'mericans; we start losing our cultural identity over a few generations. T_T
I prefer to listen to Cantonese-pop songs over Mandarin ones.
