I think I'd blown up my somics after all... frown.gif

I keep hearing distortion in the music and kept tweaking things until I turned off the compressor, still heard distortion, thought I was listening to badly mastered music, then finally played a track I thought couldn't possibly be compressed or distorted, still heard this distortion like someone whistling into a piece of tape.  Took off the tape covering the bass ports (tape? Buzzing? Duh?) but no, the buzzing is still there.  Compared using MH1C, no buzz, asked boris to listen to the track, no buzz either.

I think I'll have to find someplace to hide a broken pair of somics from wifey soon and pretend the new pair I buy is the pair I've had all along... tongue.gif

Now, what to listen to tonight... triportsad.gif

I've always wanted to try an buy them to master it myself.... maybe someday.

You can start with Nine Inch Nails (dunno if you like that rock band). They believe in multitracks and have released 3 of their albums made entirely of multitracks and the best thing, it's completely free.

I said that the drums were very much incoherent and lost between the instruments, the bass is distorted and the guitar has lost its grit. The vocals were OK though. So I did some tinkering with the music files to sort of "remaster" it somewhat using what I have. The results are positive but still left to be desired. The drums are now present but is a bit loose and boomy, the bass is smoother and the vocals are still great.
Here's what I did:

This is the waveform of the song in its original state (Audacity).

It's pretty much compressed all the way in the chorus.

What I needed next was the vocals only but since there are no multitracks for this song, there's only one way.
All I needed to do was put the original and the instrumental track through Audacity and invert the instrumental track and then exporting making sure that the gain on both tracks are at -5dB. The addition of two opposites of a wave signal will make silence except for the vocals. The result is this:

It's not perfect because I can still hear some instruments but it should do.

Next I took the instrumental track and EQed it to bring the bass around the 75Hz to life then I put the vocal track in and mixed it down, the result is this:

The bass is a bit boomy but the song is no longer strident.

Now any volunteers that want to test my "remaster"? Can I post links for the track or is it better to PM?

Ask a mod (preferably Currawong) before you share publicly. In the meantime, PM me. :P

PMed

Oh yeah, make sure to listen at equal loudness. Because obviously, some people see louder as better.
Pm me it pls

I did this because I was quite pissed at the poor quality of the track during the chorus. Egoist songs are decently mastered, they are compressed for sure but they sound nice. "All Alone With You"? That's blasphemy. I wonder if artists ever hear their recordings after mastering and wondered "What have I done wrong?"

Anyway, what did you think? Not a big improvement isn't it?
Following standard chart

Egoist gets

3.5 to 5/10 from me.
