I wholeheartedly agree on the 'terrible value' on the MBP, but I personally just weigh portability, battery life, screen quality and overall build quality above the actual performance of the machine.

My logic being, what good is a laptop you won't carry around?

£1500 is actually kinda a poor budget here in the UK for a real high end rig. You have to step up to £2k for a full high end system and add another £2k for peripherals. I'd be tempted by a watercooled dual 8-core Xeon with a Quadro card. That would probably be hitting the £5k+ region just for the main tower.

yea I hear ya, I would totally be an apple fanboy if....

1. All windows progs and games worked on OS X

2. I could get the hardware in it that I just picked for the Sager at the same price

if those two conditions were met it would be hands down Apple

Obviously the number 1 isn't realistic but if it was I feel like they would take the whole market

On a different note, I need a good closed can for watching movies at work

TBH, I'll never understand the gaming laptop. But that's only because I never do any consistent gaming outside a home setting where desktop power is king. That and life-span of a laptop just isn't good enough for me to justify putting that much money into it.

If you have the disposable income, I say good choice. I would have gone a little bigger on the screen if gaming was your plan, but that'll get the job done.

That being said, it all depends on how/where you plan to use it.

Yeah, I game at home -_-

Bowei, I think you and Boris should decide who gets the PH unit, or rather how to figure out who gets it.

What switches does the keyboard have?

Dem sandals...

Hmm, I own the Mad Dogs. Hadn't heard the song before this, but I just checked it out on youtube. I don't really like screaming, but that song's kick drums are a great example of why I love the MDs. Plenty of punch from them while remaining quick and linear, and keeping everything else clear.

Ehh, rock paper scissors. I don't really have an opinion.

Yeah.

Gets off? A $500+ laptop is a luxury. If it was a necessity to buy a $1500 computer. I would agree. But it's not.

They do.

Crossover

Bootcamp

Parallel Studios

Wine.

You can almost do. Mac Pro supports many parts. But only specific parts will work.

The computers they make are not for gaming. They are for those that will buy it. It is a luxury.

And you guys do realize that Microsoft is doing the same exact thing now right? Locked down applications and GUI (or more locked down) on their OS and a Tablet that is very very pricey and near uncompetiable in the market with many key features missing.

I think it's a bad idea to buy a high end rig, unless you have a very specific use for it.

It's better to just get the best bang for your buck, then upgrade again in a few years when the world has moved on.

But it's cool to splurge on peripherals. tongue.gif

I think things are looking good for the future of laptops, as ultrabooks are all the rage these days with everyone 'catching up' to the MBA's. It won't be too long until we see some great rMBP alternatives!

When I travel nowadays, playing games is the last thing on my mind, which is why my 13" Air is more than enough for backing up photos and whatnot.

Rage? Not really. Ultrabooks failed. It was one of 2012's largest failures. Quasi ultrabooks are populra though.

Surface is where low to medium budget laptops are heading though. The detachable kb/docking station with the tablet functionality is ideal for people these days. It's only expensive because the full version of windows 8 requires a decent x86 processor while the RT version is ARM only and doesn't have enough manufacturer support for the prices to drop from competition. Surface is quite competitively priced here, although that could just be because all the other tablets are subject to a massive EU markup.*cough*Apple, google*cough*

Yea but do you know how many idiots just buy a MBP because its a Macbook Pro. They have a ton of consumers fooled that a MBP is the only way to go. The prices are literally insane, it's insane for what you get.

cause I hate the M50s and their V shaped signature. The voices in movies are so recessed.

I'm with you. If you have no plans to use the potential of your system, you are better of spending only enough money to get done what you need and save that money for upgrades/next system or some other hobby... ... ... yup. In the end, if you have the money to spend, none of it really matters I guess.

I go medium budget as well, I just OC the nuts off it. A 5k system would be exclusively for 3D work though, hence the quadro.(ever since AMD and Nvidia gimped the drivers on their consumer cards).

They failed because of the enormous price. At £400-500 they would be snapped up.
