Just came back from Jaben Jakarta and played with various headphones.

I auditioned the Sony XBA-4, MDR-Z1000, MDR-MA900, Denon AH-D2000 and the Fostex HP-A8 DAC/Amp.

Listening Impressions:

Sony XBA-4: Didn't like it, too much annoying piercing treble and very fatiguing to the ears.

Sony MDR-Z1000: Excellent build quality (mind you, magnesium cups), industrial look, comfortable, balanced sound with very nice punch on the bottom end, detailed and airy treble, mids could give a bit more detail and body.

Sony MDR-MA900: Excellent comfort, a nice open sound with good soundstage and good imaging but the sound is decent, some bass emphasis but overall, not much detail but a relaxed sound. Very forgiving on poorly mastered tracks.

Denon AH-D2000: Comparing it to the K550, the D2000 feels better built and nicer looking. Comfort is hands down for the K550 but the sound is sonically better on the D2000. It can sound a bit harsh but at least, it has good mids and vocals with body (unlike the K550), a realistic and well defined treble (K550's treble sounds a bit artificial and piercing) and balanced lows with body and impact (K550 is tighter though), soundstage is not as wide as the K550 but more natural and better imaging too, overall a more neutral and accurate sound over the K550. But when it comes to isolation, I wonder myself if the D2000 is a closed or open headphone.

Fostex HP-A8: I didn't have much time with it but the sound was beautiful. Lush, smooth and lean. I spotted a hint of warmness but it had great detail resolving. It sounded very natural and musical .

You guys suck for not recommending JJBA as one of the most best anime this season. But of course, considering the anime that you guys find 'good' is pretty crap anyways, you wouldn't know gold even if it hits you in the head.

Also, thanks zer0s-kun for linking that Vocaloid article by the Atlantic. That's some seriously good transit read.

@vortex

Now we're in the "Just came back from Jaben" club biggrin.gif

EDIT:

I need to kick myself for not ABX-ing some amps today...

I just built my ABX switch too....

@Jgrey / JJBA

Saw the cover art, never looked at the series again.

Yep, I'm Just your average moe-loving otaku....

maybe when I get older.....
