I never understood all these time zone names, why can't everyone just use UTC+n?
Much more intuitive IMO.

It's because people live in different areas of the world and it would be practically impossible to implement.

Protip everyone: When cleaning out a fan that hasn't been cleaned in 13 years, do NOT wear a black shirt, and do it outside...

Why not a black tshirt:blink:
Because you can see every speck of dust. XD

Definitely not financially prosperous - that area is the worst it's ever been. (Some would say the prosperity of the '90s was part of the bubble that burst.)

But scientifically, technologically, etc., the human race has come a long way, and it's progressing even more rapidly. Too bad things like solving world hunger are more a problem of distribution than production.

Yup, very true.

Oh yeah. Well technically, "now" will always be the most technologically advanced period in humanity's history. Eventually we'll solve hunger with technology! Like those 3D printers that can print food!

Oho, nice call! I didn't specify tshirt, but I always wear tshirts. XD

Because white/light brown dust is quite visible on a black shirt, hahaha

Welp, I finally took the bait and bought a prototype Xbox 360 off Taobao that I've been wanting to buy for about 4 years not since I discovered them, but neither had the funds and never felt quite secure sending my money to some random guy in China. But alas, the time is nigh and they are down to their last unit. It's now or never, so I figured **** it, I'll order it and take my chances. It's now or never baby.

What...? Which time zone(s) couldn't be mapped to an offset from UTC?

Sorry, I wasn't thinking about the offset. But then it would just be different time zones anyway, without the fancy names.

lol Isn't that like the whole point? Would you prefer I tell you that I'm in UTC+8 or CST (China Standard Time)?

For some reason, I'm thinking about Terra Nova. A futuristic post-apocalyptic society on the brink of extinction discovers a time warp, travels to prehistoric times, but brings their super-technology along with them. (Didn't help much in the fight against dinosaurs though, lol)

I'm about to solve my hunger with technology - clam chowder in the microwave. :p

I'm not even buying it for gaming, dev kits, especially beta consoles, cannot play xbox games.

But it will go well with this:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I'm more familiar with the latter format. Would you prefer I tell you that I am from "sector nine-C of the fictional glorious global empire" or just say "United States"? Universalism is good for some things, but forcing it on the world isn't my cup of tea.

Then again, it appears that UTC is in use everywhere anyway, and is an optional way of saying things. The problem is getting people to use it instead of anything else, and that's where coercion may come into play.

Hmm... I just find those abbreviations really annoying because I can't compute the offset in my head when I see it....

Instead I have to google it.... It's really counter intuitive IMO....

I haven't researched time zones much, so either way would require the assistance of a search engine. UTC is certainly more mathematically logical and efficient. Anyway, when I said "practically impossible to implement", I meant convincing everyone to use it. That would be universal mind control, after all. Some people take pride in where they are from and would be averse to being given a generic number, even for something as trivial as this. EST for life, baby! Just kidding...I may move to another country someday.
