I'd say "wouldn't something like a GTX 760 be enough already?" but I'm not a huge gamer so I don't know.

I don't get it, why can't you just take your computer back home over the summer? They're letting you leave your stuff at uni?

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

My friends and I are renting a storage locker

I live 650 miles away from home. I have a schit ton of stuff. The only way I can move all my stuff back home is if my parents come to get me.

The drive one way here is about 12 hours. This is due to pit stops, traffic during the metropolitan area, and just general conditions.

My PC is a slightly bigger mid Tower that weighs 60+ lbs and is kinda fragile.

I'm going back home by train this summer... I can't carry or bring the main computer back at all.

So I'm investing less than $200 to build a barebones mini-ITX setup so I can drop half of the parts of my main computer into it.

It just so happened to be that I'm awesome at sales and was able to get everything at the lowest price possible......

One of the best mini-ITX cases with long GPU support for $29.99. A good i5 Haswell CPU for $99.99, and somehow was able to score the cheapest price availble anywhere($59) of an Mini-ITX motherboard of the kinda I need with respectable feedback etc. All for sub $200.

I'm gonna drop into this computer, the $108 AMD 7870 GHz that I bought, the RAM, and the PSU of my main system. And most likely the HDD I have a spare of.

Ohhh I see, you guys are just renting a storage unit, that makes sense.

Still, is driving up and back that much less expensive than flying? (shrug)

Seems like a pretty sweet idea though. :)

Flying with just myself and one luggage bag for 3 transfer flights(cheapest) is around $700

My parents do NOT want to drive.

Anyway, I just went from cool mini-ITX rig to MUTHA TRUCKING JENKINS rig.

I have two of the fastest SSDs in my computers as well :D :gs1000smile: that I can port and bring over to my mini-ITX rig when I leave for the summer.

Problem now is that my Mini-ITX rig for general computer use will most likely be faster than my desktop rig.....and my mini-ITX rig only cost me $200 as I am a cheap asian in getting deals. (plus I had two 7870GHz gpu's to spare)

Nah, my GTX770 Classy would barely run most new games at those specs. Watchdogs or dying Light? Probably lucky to get 30~40fps if I max everything.

Uber hard would include overclocking, custom cooling and probably a paintjob too.

Considering your rig is pretty dated, and everything you bought for the mini-itx is current gen. I'm not surprised.

It's dated but there hasn't been a need for me to update it

The 965BE is still a fine CPU. I don't do any heavy editing, rendering, etc with it and don't need to get that extra 5-10% boost from my GPU's with a better cPU.

There hasn't been as big of a software to hardware type leap yet for a lot of stuff to be useless yet.

I would need to spend another $150 to get the new computer running by itself without parts from my main one so I can get both operating together. But hey, not bad for a $450 computer.

Case: Cooler Master 120 Elite Advanced ($29.99)

CPU: Intel Core i5 Haswell 4430 3GHz Quad ($99.99)

GPU: AMD Radeon 7870 GHz OC'd to 1200/1350 ($108)

SSD: Samsung EVO 840 128GB ($58)

PSU:(not yet bought but $50 500W PSU should do)

RAM:(not yet bought but $50 8GB Ram should do)

Comes out to about $450. Windows comes with my University software pack.

Happy birthday Michelle!

It was my birthday yesterday on the 24th, my power supply finally decided to call it quits that night as well, and unfortunately, it was a public holiday on the 25th so the computer shops are going to be closed for the long weekend.

The PSU was a 7 year old silverstone, I guess mining for a year finally destroyed it, it wasn't a spectacular failure by any means, it just didn't power on anymore. I think I'll upgrade to a Seasonic platinum 860...

So here I am listening to tunes with the Apple EarPods on a Macbook Air (which is nearly as good the Stax rig), sipping a dram from a $230 bottle of scotch (which is nearly as good as a standard $80 bottle).

Eh, could be worse...:p

Belated happy birthday to deadylover! redface.gif

How do earpods get nearly as good as stax? blink.gif

I had a spectacular PSU failure early this year--loud bang and smoke and melted PSU cord blink.gif

I think my dabbling at distributed computing also killed a hard disk by overheating last year... rolleyes.gif

Hah, thanks Joe-sensei.

Why, that magic of believing of course!

Sound quality isn't very important to me. ;)

Hopefully the PSU failure didn't take anything with it!

Herzlichen Glückwunsch nachträglich!

230 bucks? Is this some kind of 30 year old Laphroaig?

The power adapter pack thing of my laptop exploded one or two months ago. Loud bang, power blackout.

Nope, it's Bruichladdich Octomore 5.1 5y/o scotch!

I knew what I was getting into when i bought it, it's just a 'gimmicky' scotch thats really heavily peated, it's not horrible by any means, just really poor value for money. Still, it's worth it for the experience.

The earpods sounding good as Stax probably has something to do with the bottle of scotch that was mentioned.
