Heh, CFW for the slim slim, I doubt that'll ever happen. I doubt much hacking will happen outside of the sketchy Chinese pirating scene since Sony sued geohot for the original PS3 CFW :/
I'm in Australia though!

Damn it! Maybe modchips are the way to go?
Ah, I always thought you were just in the US orz

Nope, all the mod chips do is let you downgrade to 3.55 (console had to have 3.55 on it at some point, which the slim slims didn't) so you can install CFW.

For starters, Serial Experiments Lain is certainly unlike anything I've ever seen before. It presents psychological issues at the expense of the viewer; characters in SEL don't ask or beg for the viewer's empathy. There is no false sense of insanity (the show's actually very sane, in contrast to popular belief), and the characters are portrayed very realistically (though albeit quiet). There are no statements visually or through dialogue that tells the viewer about a particular character's condition, very rarely does the show express emotion conspicuously. Yet, even without truly understanding the character's intentions, yet I feel as if SEL displays one of the greatest portrayals of characterization in anime. Characters in SEL do not show ambition, and through this medium, the events that take place 99% of time seem unaccounted for (unexpected). There still is a cause and effect factor within the plot, yet it is highly likely the viewer will not notice this relation, nor will he or she be able to explain a certain event's purpose, since he or she will be spending most the anime trying to understand the purpose of the previous scene, or the reasons for a certain character's reaction during the present scene. The best way I can describe it; is that the characters in SEL are like the characters you would see in a very good movie, where the actors don't express their feelings through facial expressions, or words, but through atmosphere. It's just a very mature anime, and viewers should try their best to remain open minded when watching.

Basically, everything's a mystery, yet there are answers to be found, and everything that happens, happens for a reason, not the way you might want it to happen.

The plot is something else. Potential viewers; don't hold any expectations for SEL, just watch it and get an idea for yourself. It's pretty first rate in my opinion, and EXTREMELY original (it was made in 1998)

Lain (the MC) is an absolute enigma, and is currently one of the best characters I've seen to date. Her ability to characterize her role in SEL rivals only that of Dio Eraclea (Last Exile), and Samejima, Mamimi (FLCL).

Also, for potential watchers; this anime is not enjoyable. It lacks drive and ambition, yet this is factor is what makes SEL subtly amazing, and at times utterly shrouded in mystery.

SEL is not entertainment (more like a mind game), it doesn't beg the viewer to watch, and I can't call it a masterpiece either, but what it does do, it does extremely well; and with a cold shoulder.

I will post all my impressions after I finish the anime

Looking forward to it. And thanks for the non spoiler impressions

Well I did mention a few times here that I'm a Hong Konger living in Australia.

I thought some modchips also let you play burned discs?

The Onkyo stack actually comes with another box that's exactly the same size as the amp unit and connects to the "System Connection", but that unit has two tape decks and a 10-CD stacker. Nobody uses cassettes and CDs anymore!

I just finished episode 12 of Serial Experiments Lain; arguably one of the most enlightening experiences I've ever been through. No question, SEL just confirmed its status as the deepest thing in the universe. It's like watching Beck's Modern Guilt and Sun RA's Strange Strings in anime format.

Sun Ra always was more like drug fueled noise to me.....it's just too "free".
This is my kind of drug music! (and it's from Japan so...thread canon :P)

Yes, having fair democratic elections and that cycle is good. That has its ups and downs with good and bad leaders and can also lead to serious crap and failing if not done correctly.

Putin and his crownies thought, **** that schiit. A new federation would be beneficial with a 'behind the scenes' autocratic based system. As history, political studies, and LOGH shows. This is indeed one of the beneficial ways. This way, is actually more beneficial for countries that are rising out of ashes IF DONE CORRECTLY. This typically isn't that case, and the possibility of long standing dictators leads to possible more worse solutions than a full democratic system. Most choose the safer and slower route. Putin said **** that.

You need to look at the big picture. Look at the RF's history, and look at what Putin has done. It is nothing less than awe aspiring and moving. In one of the recent videos showing Russian Cossacks beating a protestor. One of them said 'Putin will teach you to love the motherland'. It was funny, but it was also real.

LOGH was nothign short of amazing.

So do I.

That's more than enough money for a PC without a fancy graphics card.

No hard feelings, bro.

Alright, I just finished Serial Experiments Lain. The ending's a bit cliche (heck 1998), but in the end I understood a good bit of what SEL was about. I can't say it was the most enjoyable experience, but it certainly is one of the best anime I've ever watched.

It is the

-Greatest mind game I've ever experience; its all about connecting revelations and seeking the ultimate truth of the matter that is Serial Experiments Lain. You'll (you) go on a journey with Lain to find the ultimate truth behind the real world and the wired (its mutual; Lain's your best friend, but she gets to play Sherlock). Throw away everything you believe, since nothing in the anime reflects the actual world, as it should.

-Just as confusing as FLCL; the anime extends so deep at times, you'll find yourself forgetting what you just watched. It's good to keep a good layer of self-awareness when viewing.

-I need a break; Probably gonna read book and get a girlfriend or something.

A little advice from ANN

The latter may come closest to getting all of the puzzle pieces to fit, while also framing the series around La>in—whose metamorphosis from shy schoolgirl to terrifying electronic god is the human core that pushes the series from intriguing head-game to disturbing sci-fi masterpiece. But why choose just one? The series is all that and more. Here's my suggestion: Stay up 24 hours. At about midnight, juice yourself to the gills with caffeine pills. Open a nearby window so that the night sounds can come in, wrap yourself in a blanket and watch the whole thing from beginning to end. You won't know what to think. Exactly as you should.

When?...since I started paying for Netflix and Amazon

If those sites have the series I want at the correct Hd resolution and subtitles, I will watch them there. 99% of the time, it fails that.

80% of the content on those sites in anime are dub. And or use SD footage, or are slightly modified versions of the anime etc.

I'm paying for those companies and service already. But ***** it if I am going to pay more for schiitty service.

Steam and Netflix have the philosophy that piracy is due to a service problem.....dayum right *******. $60 for a AAA video game with low replayability, or $200 for an anime box set, or video services with schiit service are the reasons I don't do more legit anime and new AAA games.

I recommend reading the LN Utsuro no Hako..

It caught me completely off guard by how deep it was
