Ok yet another series was completed this past weekend (I told you that I went on a hell of a binge). This time I will give you my short impression/review of Chäos;Head.

Since I finished Steins;Gate a couple of weeks ago and I had seen Robotics;Notes, I figured that I might as well finish the semicolon series off with Chaos;Head. Well I didn't save the best for last. While I liked that the main character was a NEET in training and otaku, there wasn't really anything else of note in the series.

You can tell while watching it that it was sourced from a VN, but the way they handled it was pretty sad. There really was no decent romance, they hinted at one very early on but nothing progressed from there. Instead the focus was on all of the twists and turns you expect from these ; shows, but in this case, the twists and turns were boring. Even the out of left field ones left you thinking "ok, whatever, that's cool that person X that I don't care about has issues, but is it over yet?". They make a big deal over certain details but when the "big reveal" happens, they turn out to be pretty minor. Thus, instead of building you up for the grand finale, you are left apathetic most, if not all of the time.

Can you tell I was underwhelmed?

Why would you even watch something that is ranked #3344 on MAL?

If something is ranked so poorly than it must be objectively bad.

1) It was there.

2) I watched the other 2 " ; " shows and I am a completionist.

3) Watching bad stuff makes for more well-rounded opinions, and it helps me appreciate the merely good or above average shows that much more!

4) I might be a masochist, the jury is still out on that one however.

Fair enough, I guess.
I just don't have the time or patience to watch shows that are most likely not worth my time.

Most AWESOMESAUCE anime and manga aren't in the top 10. A lot are, but many are like at 100

Well hey, you can't expect too much from a 30 hour VN compressed into a 5 hour anime.

For the record, C;H remains one of my favorite VNs of all time.

(looking at that pic.... I don't remember the anime artwork being this bad.... oh wells...)

In the mean time, wait for the 4th ";" series... ChäoS;Child

Oh that goes without saying. A lot of the higher up ones are simply overhyped.

Is it me or are 70-80% of today's VN (erotic and non-erotic) have this same look and feel to them art wise.

But then again, I don't play much VN (I only see the CGs if you know what I mean ) . The only VNs that I've played are: Saya no Uta, Edelweiss, Togainu no Chi, DRAMAtical Murder and DRAMAtical Murder: reConnect.

Many, but not all.

Most of the top 10 on MAL for anime and manga are good and can be understood in terms of how it was up that high...but there are better ones.

Oyasumi punpun definately deserves going up there. But....a few others

When the art style and formula is making so much money, why change it? Is the logic

The art was pretty sketchy in that show. The issue with turning the VN into an anime, is that the best way to do it in a 12 episode run is to just pick one girl and follow that rout. C;H didn't really pick any girl, and that would be fine if the other events that happen to the main character were at least a little interesting... but they weren't. He was caught up in a whirlwind of stuff from the get-go, and to me, he never figured anything. Even his cliched "epiphany" in the final episode didn't seem genuine, I still think he hadn't figured out a damn thing lol.

If you have more time (24 episode series), you can do what Kanon did and touch base with everyone but only maintain 2 or 3 "main" love interests.

You don't change a winning team I guess.

But sometimes, change is good.

Dayum, I just can't believe how good my tiny Audiophonics U-Sabre DAC sounds. DAC wise, It's really the neutral and detailed kind with an impressive amount of resolve for it's price and form factor. It's not as smooth sounding nor as wide sounding as the HP-P1 but it's a huge upgrade from the crappy inboard sound from the laptop.

The only thing I don't like is the amp section (too weak for planars) but I couldn't care less because I'm using the RCA line out to a Fiio E12.

I may write a review about it in the coming weeks.

For those who don't know, the Audiophonics U-Sabre is basically a HiFimeDIY with slight variations.

Lists like that are dangerous, there are a lot of shows that I dropped in the top 100, those Natsume Yuujinchou series were real snooze-fests for me. And how is Magi that high? I am enjoying Magi, but it is not the 68th best anime series by a long shot.

Also you see a lot of fan-boyism in there, sequels rank much higher because they are more likely to be watched by people already hooked to the show, but I'd say 80+% of the time sequels are subjectively worse than the first seasons of most shows.

Yup, trusting positive reviews is always kind of risky, but if there are hundreds of people rating a show with a 6/10 or whatever, then there has to be at least a bit of trith in this score.

I think review scores are not a really good indication of how good or bad an anime or manga is.

The problem is that most people really don't want to read a short or long review. Most of them look at the score and if it's good then they'll watch it thus its popularity will raise regardless if he thinks it's good or not.

A solution for this is to do what Kotaku has done for a while for their games and animes review system. Remove the scoring system and put a more simpler neutral "should you watch it/play it" with its pros and cons.
