Need equipment suggestions - headphones // total noob

Thread Starter

Hello highly knowledgeable audiophiles,

I work in a factory with ambient noises in the high 90's (dB).  Its incredibly boring and at times quite physical.  Music is the only way I retain my sanity.  I need headphones.

Noise cancelling

ear fitting

loud or louder than 90 dB

durable

concealable would be nice (out of sight/out of mind)

a cable long enough to run the length of my head to my pants pockets ( im 6 feet tall ) and have me still able to move alot

id love to say money is no object, but then i probably wouldnt be a factory worker :-)

(but seriously music = sanity so ill rationalize large prices if something can perform)

Could you guys make me some suggestions?

thank you kindly,

Will

For what you've described the Etymotic HF5's would be perfect for working in a loud factory.  It has the best noise isolation of any IEM with great detail and you can get them from Amazon for just under $100.

heres the Amazon link if you want to check them out, http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-Portable-Earphones-Cobalt/dp/B000XP8DJC/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1324260687&sr=1-6

Etymotic also has a cheaper one in the MC5 and it still has good isolation but doesn't sound as good as the HF5's but they're still very nice.

90+db is in the range that can damage your hearing.  I see you're on a budget, but you might consider custom IEM's to really isolate from that external sound and protect yourself.  You'd be able to listen at reasonable levels all day long.

The HF5's or MC5's will cut the 90db down into the 50db range which is safe and wont cost you 4 or 5 hundy like customs would.

I'd highly recommend the HF5. It seems I'm on a ety recommending spree.

Anyway, not only would they provide good sound quality, they would protect your ears by isolating about 40db. You can also consider having the custom tips made for the HF5 which are only $100.

these koss over the ears were designed to block noise first then they added sound in!

He's working in a factory all day I don't think big azz cans would be ideal, also he said "concealable would be nice".  You should really just get one of the Etymotics because they would be the best for what you want.

I didn't mean to come off like a jerk or anything he just says he wants something small that has good isolation and either of the Ety's would be perfect for that.
