Headphones and cold weather?

Thread Starter

I'm planning to use my headphones while walking to class. I'm in Canada, and it often gets down to -20 centigrade or so during the dead of winter. Will I have any problems with using my headphones in weather that is so cold? If it's relevant, all of my cans are closed.

Also, shout out to redditors of r/audiophile. It's how I found out about these boards.

I haven't had much trouble with over-ears, but when I use 2/3 of my iems under 30 degrees the cables tend to stiffen up which makes it hard to keep them in my ears.  It may be a problem unless you're using particularly thick cabled iems.

i wore my V Moda Vibe RedRoxx iems in the bitter korean winter (average around id say -10, it'd go down to -20) and the cables have stiffened up cause of the cold, the clear stuff that wraps around the red bit inside has got smaller, so the part of the cable that was exposed to the cold is noticeably thinner than the part that was inside my jumper

If they are closed, normally don't worry.

But drivers are still very sensible, the most important is to prevent condensation. Too hot and too cold quicly its not good for them.

Also, drivers heat up when they operate, so if possible, don't let headphones in cold without operate.
