Hi, I've looked around the internet, but I can't find the answer to my question-- when enabling dolby headphone, should you switch the control panel setting for windows 7 to 5.1 sound or leave it at stereo?

Dolby Headphone question

It should definitely be at 5.1.
Otherwise, applications may only provide two channels, and Dolby Headphone doesn't really work well with just stereo when the whole point is to provide some semblance of front and rear imaging.
Just one other question- when enabling the 7.1 virtual speaker shifter, you should enable 7.1 speaker in-game, or just leave it at the default dolby headphone 5.1?

Well, if you don't need to switch between a 5.1 speaker system lacking the extra side channels and headphones, I'd definitely raise it to 7.1. The extra two channels just might help sounds pan a bit smoother around the sides.
Thanks.
