OS X Master Volume?

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm not that smart so I'll ask it anyway.  I have a 27" iMac and at the moment I'm just using the analog audio output to some relatively cheap computer speakers.  I keep the volume of iTunes (and Spotify) at the max, but I'm not sure what the optimum setting is for the OS X volume.  Just to be clear, I'm talking about the volume adjustment that sits up in the top right of the menu bar next to the day and time.  I don't know what it's set to by default, but it seems a little quite to me.  I'd like to increase this volume, but not so much that it distorts.  Are there any OS X users that have experience with what the max volume is that will produce good sound (well, as good as that output gets I suppose) but without distorting?  I'm basically just using it as a line out.

Digital volume should be maxed. I don't know OS X, but I don't know why it would use analog volume control or allow you to boost the signal beyond what it should be at.

If the volume knob on your speakers causes problems at where you set it, you can turn the digital volume down and speaker volume up until it sounds right.

I'm not talking about digital volume, though.  The iMac only has a single audio output port, which acts as a combination analog/digital output.  Right now, I'm using it as an analog line out.  That volume, according to the settings, is set at 50%.  To me, it seems too quiet.  I'm just curious if any OS X users have ever played around with that volume setting to see what the optimum setting was for the purpose of using it as an analog line out.
