Christmas ideas: Audio Technica ATH-50 + AKQ Q701 OR Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro

Looking to explore new sounds away from the rig in my sig this holiday season, I am interested in picking up some new cans.

So, do I get myself 2 new sounds with ~$300 budget by getting the ATH-50 & the Q701s, or do I pick up a $300 set of cans like the DT990 Pro?

My goal is to have a can for every style of music I listen to.  ATH-M50 accomplishes my basshead can, etc.

I'm buying a pair of Denon D1100 for my Secret Santa.

Why not get a Grado to complement your HD650.

Listened to the SR325i recently, didn't really like them.

trust me when i tell you this because I just myself got a ATH-M50 strait cabled version....

DO NOT GET THE M50, instead save your pennies and get a denon AH-D2000 instead.

You will be very dissapointed when you compare the Q701 to the ATHM50....they're not even on the same asteroid field.

I have sennheiser hd 555, hd 600, Q701, Denon AH-D2000, and last but mostly least this brand new ATHM50s that i will be returning very shortly....its just too close in price to the big boys, but its not the same quality wise.

Alsol, the M50 is false advertising....it is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT an over the ear headphone. Your ear goes INSIDE the leather cups, its nothing at all like the other headphones i have in my collection, personally I hate it because i listen to audiophile type things in my computer room, sound isolation isnt an issue...i just want most possible quality....and the weird headphone pads on the M50 make it very uncomfortable to wear for a long time, plus it clamps, on your head very tightly, it looks cheap, and it just doesnt compare to the other headphones i mentioned here.

Me personally....I think i might go for a 990 600 ohm beyerrdynamic......or some kind of Grado. I want an in your face phone but not sure whats the best one.

I've been comparing the Q701 and DT990 600 ohm for a few days. My personal thoughts Q701 all the way. DT990s sound so thin in the midrange due to that smile curve. Guitar sound just isn't there. They do easily win in the bass department, but that is it.

I agree with him. If you already have the HD650 and considering the DT990 or a K701 then the M50 shouldn't even be on your list. A friend of mine brought his over once. I have to say that they were very disappointing considering I hear so much praise for them.
