On my JVC HARX34 and HAFX35 I keep all frequencies in FooBar2000 flat with 1 DB boost on the top three treble bands and I'm happy....nice instrument seperation.....clear mids....crystal clear highs with cymbals....on well recorded Jazz.... sounding right.....not overwhelming but not under presented. I'm a drummer so I listen to cymbal presentation.
Actually I can live without any EQing with these which is why I'm so impressed with them.
Knocking the low end down doesn't kill the low rumble so I guess it also has something to do with your source/amp.
I prefer a slight tilt towards bass than treble only it doesn't makes the rest of the spectrum a mess.
The JVC HAFX34 was the first iem that impressed me so maybe I'm a bit biased but I like them better than the M9. Even though the M9 has a touch better treble....the overall presentation isn't as good as the JVC.....to my ear anyway.
Take for example Lady Gaga Bloody Mary/Black Jesus....that song has gobs of low content.....on the M9 ok....on the JVC HAFX34 and HAFX35 PERFECT. Just the right amount of overhang in the bass without muddying up the rest of the frequencies and more enjoyable than on my Audio Technica ATH-A700 or HTF600.
Club in the HEAD effect with an overall clear and precise presentation.
And I find all musical genres presented very well......Smooth Jazz to Metal....Electro Pop.....Acoustic.......Rock.
To the starter of this thread:
I say for budget iem start wit the JVC HAFX35....but you need to have a good seal. The double flanged tips work best with my ears along with the LARGE CLEAR singles from Ultimate Ears.....I know you might not have those but I'm telling you what worked best for me since the foamies that JVC provides don't work with my ears.
