It does best with dynamic driver IEMs and portable headphones where it sounds very musical. With BAs it sounds rather lifeless and hisses like a barrel of snakes, even with the BA firmware. Actually, the BA firmware really doesn't help much with the hiss but sucks the musicality out of the sound. The RoCoo Power, which I just received seems better but I haven't had much time with it yet due to Christmas activities."
I am listening to the Studio V now with my Westone ES5 and there has been no hiss at all.
The sound is flat and neutral but is not lifeless. The lack of musicality could easily be confused with sounding dull and lifeless. Those looking for warm and euphoric type of sound, this DAP may not be for you.
So far, I find the Studio V to be very accurate and detailed sounding - I could hear everything in the manner I mixed them and the low level details could be heard clearly.
On a side note, the bundled earphone sounds pretty good with the DAP. It is a little uncomfortable to wear though due to its size but I could have easily live with the DAP as well as its bundled earphone had not it been for its size.
Didn't wish to say all these till a later stage when I get a more accurate picture of everything when the DAP is fully burnt in but I felt the need to correct certain misconception. Perhaps the problem existed with the earlier batch of Studio V. No idea.
- Input Sensitivity: 118dB @ 1mW
- Impedance: 18 Ohms
Westone ES5 is
- Input Sensitivity: 120dB @ 1mW
- Impedance: 20 Ohms
I don't have a problem with ES5 and I don't foresee any with JH16 either.
