Switching from SR-225i to HD650 - a little help please

Hi all.

Based in the UK and stumbled across this website when researching.

I have some Grado SR-225i's and like the sound but despise their lack of comfort and want to switch to some Sennheiser's.

Probably going for the HD-650's.

My uses:

- Mainly movies at night when the HT is too loud for all sleeping ;-)

- Very occasional music - just about all genres.

Questions:

- Will my Onkyo receiver or indeed my Pioneer Kuro plasma be enough to drive these phones well?  I'm not concerned with volume enough to damage my hearing, but wish to extract quality sound from these cans?

- If not, which amp is recommended - I don't fancy spending more than say £200 ($350)?

- I've read the HD600's sound better to many - any truth?

Thanks all,

Heya,

What Onkyo receiver do you have? I will say it will likely drive them, maybe not to their full potential, but it will likely drive them fine enough to enjoy (I'd be more concerned with the DAC unless it's a better Onkyo). Also, Onkyo receivers tend to be a little dark compared to some other makers. The HD650 is also pretty dark. So together it will be a very mellow smooth sound (good, or bad, is up to you depending on what you like).

The HD600 is more neutral and a little more bright. The HD650 is darker, less bright, and a tiny bit more bassy.

Some alternatives: Beyer DT880, Hifiman HE-300, Fischer Audio FA-002, AudioTechnica AD900, AKG Q701.

I've ran many of these headphones from my Onkyo receiver without a problem (even K701's). And I've run my HD650's from a receiver. It works fine. Just pick the headphone that you think you'd like for comfort (the above are all very comfortable and neutral).

Very best,

Very best,

Hi

I have the Onkyo TX-SR505E http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR505-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B000OBOGEG

What exactly is the DAC and ho wis it of relevance to me?

I've come across what seems to be a well reviewed and decently priced headphone amp with some sort of DAC add-on:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/FiiO-Desktop-Headphone-Amplifier-Dock/dp/B004M172FY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323908618&sr=8-1

- Will this be a worthy buy?  How does the E7 benefit me?

This is the second post I've seen where someone is considering going from the Grado sound that they like to an unheard (to them) Sennheiser. Really, polar opposites here. Not quite oil and water, but a totally different presentation.

If you like the Grado sound but need better comfort / different build, you might want to try Audio Technica. The W1000X has awesome midrange and delightful warmth, but is super comfortable. Other open models might suit you as well.

I like the sound but am not in love with it. It's a little bright and I welcome a little less midrange and more low end. Hence my researched lead me to 650s
