Nice.. thanks for the heads up! I'll probably spring for 'em if they are indeed the tips shown. Good idea on the filters... I've got a few sets of those filters now actually.. I purchased the filters individually a while back to replace the filters on my Silver Bullets, then I got another set with the RE262.. so if there's a demand for 'em, I've got the supply.
@Eric.. the filters are adhesive-backed.. they're said to be acoustically transparent (so they'll work with other phones & not impact the sound).. they don't really need to be changed unless they lose their adhesiveness or gunk up.
Heh, the whole reason I'm looking for new earphones is because the filters on my old one fell off (I've found out since that it actually seems to have been a systematic problem with that particular model) and they've been discontinued so it couldn't be replaced. I didn't want to risk keeping that pair.

I was listening to both the Merlin and RE262 today and noticed some similarity how both present mids, particularly where vocals are placed in the presentation and their liquid nature. I'll have to delve more into this for my upcoming Merlin review.

Same here, they look the same but I could be mistaken, I've probably mixed and matched between the RE-Zero, RE-262, and the accessory tips that I don't know the origins.

shotgunshane.. did you buy the RE0 from head-direct.com?
When I bought the RE0 (from head-direct.com) six or so months ago, they came with the same (two) biflanges that came with the RE262. I get a great seal with the smaller biflanges but I've been curious to try the ones you linked..

Just a quick update: as expected the 2Stepdance is a fantastic match for the 262. I haven't tried it supplied with either a 9V or 15V power supply. Currently using it with a linear, unregulated 12V, 500 mA power supply. Hoping to try the 15V XP8000 battery pack next week. I am using the high gain setting. There is equal weight to the low end impact of the 2Step in comparison to my cMoyBB w/ bass boost on. However, the 2Stepdance bass is better controlled and more extended. Better texture across the frequency range in comparison to the cMoy. However, for the money the cMoy is a great portable amp, probably does 80% of what the 2Step does at 1/4th the price. I have no prior experience with the Meier-Audio line but my guess is that his amps are really musical and enjoyable to listen to, not dry by any means. The mids are palpable and this amp is smooth yet not laid back, no harsh edges. With this amp you are paying for that higher level of attack transients. There is a tinge of warmth to it which I personally like but that warmth could be coming more from the 262. With the cMoyBB there is less warmth and many may favor that but remove tonal coloration and the 2Stepdance is still sonically and technically a better headphone amp. Early opinions though, will really want to dissect this amp when I can get some free time but figured I'd get something up now because who isn't way behind on reporting back to the community.

Just received my 262's, they are the older version, without the the black box and extra cables. Just wondering as i have those same cables that came with my 272 can I use these to get Balanced sound out of HM-801 ?
By the way I just think these IEM's are very special, cannot stop listening to them. I have a counterpoint desktop amp and this thing oozes power, Just barely move the volume knob until I get both channels kick in and then I get that super fat midrange,
but also extended at both high & low frequency. Yea these things sure come alive when amped.

Interesting, coming from someone who has a Merlin, is not supposed Merlin, be in another league?

Yes, my understanding is you should be able to run them balanced on the 801 with that cable.
My comment was strictly on how the midrange is portrayed, not on the technical prowess of either. Two phones can have similarities in certain aspects of a sound signature but opposites or dissimilar in technicalities and other aspects.

Well Said Shotgun. People that are buying these 262's are saying they're sprinkled with magic dust. New to the amps just getting used to the Fiio E11 (Getting much better impressions than at first listen)
Why do you think these need to be amped. Is the bass very light? Or not very efficient? Some think the Ortofon EQ-5's are a little light on bass, but I feel they are near perfect with excellent timbre and definition, with no mid bass, Just Sub

The RE262 is not very efficient and require a good bit of juice to extract their best. More power seems to improve dynamics, treble seems crisper and bass seems tighter.
I do think the driver is very capable of excellent sub bass but needs an extra push to get to natural levels to my ears. I would think the bass boost function on the E11 would sound very nice with the RE262, helping to fill out the bottom end. Others may prefer it as is but I usually find that slightly elevated sub bass just sounds more natural, more real to me.

A good amp brings to life all the things the RE262 is capable of: fantastic dynamics, clarity, detail, separation, timbre, soundstage depth/width/height. Amp it well and you will be totally immersed in music.
I've noted numerous times how well the my portable Arrow amp pairs with the RE262. I recently acquired the Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-11 to build my desktop setup around. Running the RE262 through it at the moment and I'm completely floored. The music is so rich and vibrant that it doesn't sound like it's even coming from an IEM, let alone a full sized headphone.
A portable DAP could probably drive these to loud enough listening levels.. but it won't bring out the richness and texturing the RE262 is capable of. Again, refer to Ferrari analogy.

Yes maybe so but as I have not had the Merlin for a while, as they are still in China for that slight refit issue. But what I was merely stating is that Im really digging its sound especially the mids, used in union with my desktop counterpoint amp.
I guess I like different different IEM's for the things they do for me. Customs are fantastic but I like to have a few different types of IEM's around also, perhaps kinda greedy of me really.....![]()
Thanks SS, nice to know that I can still run them in balanced mode if I get HM-801. Also agree with your reply to pack21's question.
