So I'm looking at getting a new "mid-fi" headphone. Right now I am considering either a Beyerdynamic dt990 600ohm or an AKG k/q701. I'm going to be using them with an Asus Xonar stx which, from my reading, might be an issue with the dt990's. I have Grados, AKG k240 600 ohm, and a sony mdr-v6. Of the 3 I like the sony's the most, then the AKG, then the Grados, but I haven't used the K240's with a proper amp but the basic signature I like (the stx is coming for christmas). Basically what headphones should I get? They will be used for gaming and technical death metal/folk metal/classic rock.

I'd go for the 250ohm version, unless you are willing to get a more powerful amp/source.

The STX does not lack power or voltage (see tests here), it uses +/- 12V power supply to allow for slightly more than 7Vrms (~20Vp-p) output voltage at the maximum gain setting. While it is not guaranteed that you will like the sound, it is technically not "underpowered". However, you may want to go with the 250 Ohm version anyway, since it is more usable with other sources (portable amplifiers etc.), and it is available in "Pro" edition that is much cheaper.

This will only be used with my desktop. But I'm still not sure which one I should get, like I said I like the sound of the 240s but I keep seeing beyers mentioned as a better headphone overall.
