Old Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 compared to new "Logitech" UE600

I have been using the UE Superfi 5 with the comply tips for the last 2 years and have been extremely happy with them. Then my dog got ahold of my hardcase yesterday while I was in the shower and somehow ripped through the plastic and ate them.

I went to find a replacement, assuming I would just get the same thing because I liked it so much, only to find that my Superfi 5's were now the "Logitech UE600".  I swore off buying logitech products many years ago when they were just making PC peripherals because I found the build quality to be horrendous, but I've read a couple posts that quote some UE rep as saying "oh the UE600 is just a rebranded Superfi 5".   I find it very hard to believe that my original Superfi 5's were like $160 and now I can get the same thing from JR.com for $70 just because Logitech owns the company now.

If it's true I would happily buy it, so I am reaching out to anyone who may have had the same situation or may be knowledgeable about how similar they really are in terms of sound, build quality, etc...

Thanks in advance

why not buy TF10 if you were already planning to spend $160?

I don't know, my SuperFi 5's were so comfortable, and I was so used to them. I really just want the exact same thing, but somehow I feel like that's not what I'll be getting with the UE600. Maybe if I decide to go with something else I will look into the TF10. Although to be honest, if I get something different I will probably steer clear of any Logitech products.

You can still get the Super Fi 5 on Amazon for $89.99 but yes the Super Fi 5 and UE600 have the same top fire BA with the same specs.

lol, well I don't hate logitech enough to pay more for the same thing so I guess I will just get the UE600.  Thanks guys.

Update:  Got the UE600vi 3 days ago.  Biggest differences: 1) The Cord.  They switched the plug to a right angle, which is actually kind of nice, but they changed the materials. The new cord seems thinner and not as sturdy.  Plus, the way they packaged it resulted in the cord having several permanent right angle kinks in it.  The new material has a negative effect on the comfort of wearing them over the ear too. Fail.  2) The Case.  The new logitech carrying case is big, bulky, hard to open, and hard to get closed without pinching the cable. Fail. 3) Controls.  I didn't have the vi version of the old SuperFi 5, but I can tell you the new 600vi doesn't work with Android other than to change tracks or pause (ie:no mic).

Other than that, the comply tips are black instead of platinum colored. They sound different to me as well. Not sure what it is though.  The low end seems louder or something. Maybe they just need to be worn in.

I am looking for the old SuperFi 5vi online.  Anyone want to buy a slightly used UE 600vi?

Hello,

With regards to your question, i currently own the superfi 5 and had it for around 1 year plus. My friend has recently bought the ue600, and i have to say, the build quality are worlds apart. The wires of UE 600 are much thinner and softer, they get tangled much easily. And the white UE mark on the earpiece itself were slightly scratched off after a few days of usage while my current earpiece is left unharmed. Sound quality wise, Superfi 5 beats UE 600 by a mile. UE 600 sounds much more tinier and squirmier than superfi5 and with less bass as well. I just hope its a case of it not being burnt in, but still it sounds horrendous when i compare ue600 and superfi 5 side by side. Logitech has screwed UE. Big time.

However u can go ahead and try UE 700 though, it sounds quite satisfactory to me or if not comparable to superfi5. More bass and ambience but less accurate. See if u are more of an audiophile type or one that wants to enjoy rather than do more critical listening. UE 700 for enjoyment and Superfi 5 for more accurate sound.

Hope this helps (:

Hi, I'm also a long time user of SF5s. (long enough for the chrome paint to disappear almost entirely)

It's a pity Logitech destroyed such a nice IEMs mad.gif

I think SF5s are one of the most overlooked IEMs ever,

I love the sound, the bass is just right, the high is ok, soundstage is not bad either.

I bought UE700 and have to let it go because the high is too piercing/ sibilence for me

(Not that my genre of J-pop helps either, since they're know to be sibilence prone)

My only complain is the weak connection near the jack.

I've been using them for 2 years and have them die on me 3 times already.

1st is 6 months after buying, left channel dies near the jack, under warranty, got a new pair.

2nd time is about 7 months later, left channel cable near the jack, get it repaired nice and cheap.

3rd time about 6-7 months later (again!), left channel cable near the jack (again!), got it repaired and change the HUGE new jack.

Then couple of months ago, left channel (!?) became very quiet... I'm studying in China, so I can't find any repairman.

After fidgeting with it, I realized that if you listen to the back of the IEMs, it sounds equally loud, so something must be blocking the sound tube.

So I got it open with a knife, turn out the filter is clogged with what I assume to be wet earwax,

Though I accidentally pierced the filter, so I have to throw it away. Now the left side has no filter, I have to do the same with the right one LOL.

Unfortunately, the sound changes, the high became raw, so I did some mod by stuck comply foam into the tips, and put tissue paper over the tube to absorb the high, and they do sound good again. They don't sound the same, but still quite good.

Sorry for the long post, I have long history with them lol.

I have UE600 and it's one of my favorite IEMs. I never tried Super.fi 5, but UE600 sounds full and very natural to my ears. The bass is rich, deep and punchy and any more of it would make these bass heavy IMO. Perhaps you got a bad pair?

Apologies for the my previous reply post. I have just tried out the UE600 from the same friend again, and it appears to have improved very very drastically due to burn in. But i will still say that UE600 is still a notch down in terms of sound compared to the superfi 5. They improved the bass, however the midrange and the soundstage is still inferior to superfi5. Afterall, ue600 is much cheaper than the superfi5s, so i will say for the price, UE600 is an awesome earphone, well, after burning in. Unless u are the rough kind that u can get ur wires destroyed easily, i would really recommend ue600 for its price.

UE Superfi 5 quality isn't good to start with. My first pair didn't last me 1 year and the agent replace me with a new vi version after about 3 months wait. The vi didn't last me for 6 months. After that I just give up on UE even though I like its sound quality.

Maybe they need some more burn in? lol Apparently both UE600 and Super.fi 5 use the same driver and share exactly the same housing so I don't see how the sound can be different, unless they use different filters or the UE600 just needs more burn in. Also, have you actually AB'ed the two directly?

BTW, I find UE600 extremely sensitive to fit and source. It sounds best with a tight seal and a certain position that allows the sound to fire into the ear canal in the most direct way. It also needs a good amount of juice to shine - it sounds superb with my HM-601, but is mediocre at best with my Sansa Clip.
