Transitioning to full sized headphones

Hi, (insert obligatory personal first post introduction here)

I've been using $80 earbuds for the last year or so before I lost them.

I don't want to spend $150 on a pair of IEMs and lose them over a year, so I decided to get a pair of over the ear headphones. My dad's been complaining about this decision, saying that headphones are stifling to the ears and eventually will generate a headache.

It's somewhat of a concern. I normally use my earbuds for around 6 hours a day (now, around 1 hour a day on my stock earbuds), so I don't want to hold off this purchase -- the sooner I get it, the better since I usually work better with headphones on than without anything on.

So, are there any counter arguments to him saying that full sized headphones are uncomfortable? Sound quality doesn't count here for an argument! -- even though it's legitimate, my dad distinguishes earphones by the price tag -- more expensive is generally better in his book =( I will be wearing these for upwards for 18 hours a day with a break every 2 hours or so, so I do have to ensure that they aren't uncomfortable --

The pair of headphones that I'm eyeing right now are the Shure SRH840s. Can headphones be run for 16-18 hours a day under moderate volume without causing accelerated deterioration of the drivers?

PS: I'm paying for the headphones, I just don't have the money

for comfort i would go for the denon dx000 series or the beyer.. had the denon and tried the beyer. . both are comfortable enough for me to watch movies for more than 4 hours...
infact iems are the uncomfortable ones to me smily_headphones1.gif

and no they wont sound worst.. infact acording to many they would sound better as the drivers break in.. hope this help biggrin.gif

Your dad either has little experience with full-sized cans, or doesn't want you to waste his precious money. Any decent full-size will give you more comfort than IEM, earbuds or clip-ons. I found earbuds loose (a long time ago) and IEMs make my ears itch.

If you're coming from earbuds, likely you would be coming straight from Ipod...I recommend you re-evaluate the proposition of a good IEM for this purpose.

I'm usually using it on my computer. My last pair of good IEMs were slightly under 20 ohm impedance, and the volume control on my computer is around 10 percent MAX right now. So I have enough power in that respect. (Computer audio out port, the green one)

Can I use a Audio Technica AT PHA 10 amp when I'm on the road (which isn't really that often)
