I need a new portable

Well, since my beloved Sharp 821 got stolen by some dirty bastard, I need a new portable MD player. I have been a bit swayed by the sony MZ-R50...or the sharp 831 (or the 821 again) What I liked most about the 821 was that it was not made of plastic like most other md portables...dont get me wrong, sturdy plastic is cool and all, but i want the solid metal construction. Is the MZ-R50/55's construction as cheap as it looks in pictures? or is it solid metal...does it have a powerfull headphone jack like the sharps? Strong enough to drive my ety er6?

Cheap??? The MZ-R50 is generally considered one of the best MD recorders ever. It's built like a tank -- all metal. It also has a very good headphone jack (can't remember the power rating off the top of my head) and a true dedicated line-out jack.

I'll echo MacDEF's appraisal of the MZ-R50. It's a beautiful, solid piece of equipment. And the ER6s sound great out of it's headphone jack. I bought this on MacDEF's recommendation awhile ago and have never regretted it. It may not be as small and sexy as the newer MD players, but it looks like it will be around a lot longer. And if you want the best possible sound quality, its dedicated line-out to a portable amp should not be overlooked.

The MZ-R50 is often regarded as one of the best MD units Sony has ever produced.. it has the fastest track access time out of all Sony units, is one of the most solidly built, and has a dedicated line out, which has basically gone extinct in recent years.
It has a 5mW per channel @ 16 ohms headphone output... It's not as powerful as Sharp units of the same generation, but my MZ-R70 (which has the same power output as the 50) drove my V6s just fine. I'm not sure how well they'd drive the Etys.

I would steer away from the MZ-R55... Its battery life is very poor.

how does the R50 compare to my old sharp 821 and the 831?

yeah, I also noticed the R50 doesnt have the battery that charges when you plug in the dc....aa batteries are evil.

The R50 has a Lithium Ion battery that can be charged inside the unit...

The Sharp 831 is also a good choice. It is probably the best non-MDLP Sharp ever produced. It doesn't have a dedicated line-out like the R50, but you can switch between line and headphone outs through the menu, and it actually has a separate circuitry (I think) for the headphone out and the line out, despite the fact that it shares the same jack.

If you want an MDLP portable, I give top marks to my MT77... It's sleek, has very good battery life, feels much more solidly built than my old MZ-R70. It does not have a line-out, though.

I was wondering...is their some easier way to input text on MD's? I know the sonys have that cable thingy...does sharp have an option like that?
