Closed can headphone/ amp recommendations (new to this stuff)

Thread Starter

I'm pretty new to all this—not really an audiophile, though I may be one someday.

I'm looking to buy some nice headphones and I'm interested in hearing you all's recommendations. I know I'll need an amp and stuff too...

1st off they HAVE to be closed can. I hate attention, so no sound leakage!

I like listening to rock, grunge, metal, older rap, and movie soundtrack scores. The main reason I want some nice headphones is to get the full experience out of the movie scores—I do a lot of creative writing and I found scores to be the most inspirational.

I don't need the nicest stuff out there (I'm no sound editor or anything,) I'm just looking for a sort of intro set to audiophilism or whatever...

I'm not wanting to pay more than 400 (maybe 500) for everything, though when it comes down to your recommendations, the sky is the limit.

I really like the AKG's—they look cool & I've read a bit about them and they seem suitable for my tastes (I'm no expert). I've heard a lot of praise for the Senn 280's & the 25-1's as well (I think that's what they're called.) Though please recommend more if you have better ideas!

As for amps—I HAVE NO IDEA! this is where I need the most help. 95% of the time i'll listen off my macbook (I have the standard sound card). I take my computer places, so portable would be nice I guess, but I would like to know the pro's and con's of a desk amp.

And how much is a decent amp? I'm not looking for perfect sound (or very loud sound)—I just want a better listening experience.

I've heard people recommending DAC's (I know they're digital analog converters) but I have no idea why someone would need one... If I need one of those too, tell me but please give a reason why.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Brian

Heya,

The AKG's that are closed back are notoriously shy on the bass. If that matters to you, here's some other closed back recommendations with your genres in mind:

DT770 Premium 600ohm

Denon D2000

Fischer Audio FA-002W

Fischer Audio FA-003 [or] Brainwavz HM5

AudioTechnica A900X

Ultrasone PRO 650

As for a nice DAC/AMP that will power basically anything you put near it, the GD Audio NFB-12 is still only $200 on promotional pricing. Alts for some of these could be the FiiO E9 amp paired with anything you want).

Very best,
