Metalhead looking for some advice...

I've been using some cheap Panasonic RP-HT355 (http://www.buy.com/prod/panasonic-rp-ht355-headphone/90125669.html) headphones for a few years now. Only recently have I decided to save up and actually buy some seriously high-quality headphones.

In the meantime, my Panasonic's have died and I'm looking for a relatively cheap (but still better than basic "skull candy" type headphones) replacement until I get something truly great. I mainly listen to metal of all variety (melodeath, black, symphonic, doom etc.)

Right now I've noticed some 41-8Cspj9yL._SL500_SS100_.jpg Audio-Technica ATHM40FS Precision Studio Headphones on sale ($50-down from $150) at Amazon that look pretty decent. Anyone know if these are any good, for the price and for the genre of music? Or is there perhaps something better for around the same price (or perhaps even slightly more, say up to about $80)?

Wow, that was quick. Thanks for the response; all 4 of those look good for my purposes. Now to decide...

Think I'll go with the RP-HTF600-S. My RP-HT355's had a sound that was well above what I payed for them ($15) and the HTF600 sounds like a nice upgrade that should hold me until I get something truly fantastic.

Thanks a lot MalVeaux for your recommendations and your awesome reviews.

This is what you do

HTF600 yes

KSC75 $15 ( I actually prefer these to my Grados)

ME Electronic M6 ($20)or Brainwavz M1 ($40) for IEM

Then if you want to move up check out the Superlux HD660 for $80 smily_headphones1.gif

The SRH440 are wonderful, but right now they have less bass and are about $20 more than the Lux, maybe with more burn-in the bass will come out a bit, if not i have a CMoy with bass boost.

Not too sure about Grado, i need to mod them and try the L-cush pads, but right now i wouldn't recommend them (also keep in mind they are open)

If you listen outdoors, cancel Grado SR60i off that list. They're awesome though.

Don't get the htf600 for metal music. It's a basshead headphone. You want mids and treble. Go with the shure srh440.

I'm a metalhead.
