5.1 / 7.1 Headphone amp for blu ray / games?

Hey everyone, been lurking this forum for the last few days so I figured I should make an account.

So I've been looking into getting a good headphone setup that I'll use for music, bluray and games. I think I'm likely going to get the Denon AH-D2000s as from what I've read they seem to be the best in that price range. What I'm trying to figure out now is how to get  good sound from the sources I'll be using (mainly PS3). I'm intrigued by surround sound emulation but have never tried it. Is that something that would be beneficial for movies / non fps games? Is the audio from something like the astro mixamp any good or would I just be better off with a solid stereo dac/amp? Basically just trying to find the most immersive experience I can afford.

Thanks!

Surround sound processing can greatly improve the experience if the source material is in surround sound (and sometimes even if it isn't, but don't use that for music). Meanwhile, regular amps and DACs don't do much.

Hey man look into the astro mixamp pro, or mixamp 5.8 if you're into the wireless thing. Just go to astrogaming.com. I currently have the mixamp pro paired with the Sennheiser hd598 and it sounds amazing. I get great 3d imaging and better surround sound than my former Tritton AX Pro's. Turtle Beach also has a dolby converter but you can not hook up a mic through it. But it is only around $60-70. The astro is $129 for wired and $139 for wireless. Hope this helps good luck man.

Thanks for the fast responses! Yeah I think I'll probably go with the wireless mixamp then. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a better option.

If we are talking a headphone purely for games, I wouldnt mind giving this a shot:

Sadly, I have no personal experience, but the technology seemed to be popular with a few here some time back. Like anything, it may well have sunk without trace and I would be none the wiser.

The Astro Mixamp mentioned uses the Dobly Headphone, and so does the Turtle Beach EarForce DSS. Apperently, the Astro is better if you want to use a mic. OT, but does anybody know how you can connect a mic in a system with the Turtle Beach DSS?

Anyway, you can even use a portable amp in between the astro and your cans. Cause the astro sends the dolby headphone signal as 2.0. Keep us posted on how it ends.
