K702 vs. dt770 pro 250

I've been looking at various models and have decided the k702 are probably a good fit.  I listen to mostly guitar driven classic rock and don't really care about bass.  I like the idea of a big sound stage.  I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I listen to a ton of music and a large CD collection so it seems practical to get the most out of the my lossless files.  I know I'm supposed to audition headphones first and will be criticized for saying this, but I figure if I select a good set I will adapt my tastes to their sound anyway.  I purchased an E7 dac/amp today and might get the E9 at some point.

My question is, while I'm willing to shell out $250 for the K702, I also came across some "like new" dt770 pro 250ohm for 105 shipped.  I'm wondering if these, while likely lesser headphones and less to my tastes, are a sufficiently better value that (and money is a big concern) I should compromise my preferences and select these.  It is an unknown seller, so there is also that risk.  Since I'm not experienced with headphones, and the only pair I''ve had is an HD515, both choices will likely be quite pleasing and I probably be impressed and not know what I'm missing with the dt770s.  However I really am leaning towards the K702s, just because I've read a massive number of reviews for many different models and these seem to fit my current tastes and I don't want to regret not getting the better pair.

Ultimately, are the $105 770s enough of a better value than the K702s that I should be happy enough with the savings?  Thanks for reading.

Heya,

You should certainly look into the Q701's. And add to the cost of the headphone an amplifier that is capable of fully driving it (hint: E7 is not).

The DT770's will be bassy and not have the sound stage that you're looking for. When it comes to audio if you compromise due to the dollar sign, you'll spend more later when you realize you inevitably still try to get what you wanted the first time.

Alternatives (that will be powered fine from just an E7): Sennheiser HD598 ($170 shipped new as of 12/13), AudioTechnica AD900 ($210 shipped new as of 12/13), Shure SRH940 ($270 shipped new as of 12/13)

Very best,

Q701s are great. Highly recommended. I also greatly favor open headphones over closed, but I guess that's a personal preference.

If those two are your only options... go for the Q701.

Thanks for the suggestions, this has given me more to think about.

The K702's will provide a very big soundstage; airy and transparent sound; and good bass response.

The DT770's will provide a whomping big bass with a smaller soundstage.

And the cloistered sound typical to almost all closed headphones.

Go for the 702's.  They are terrific headphones.
