HeadPhone Amp Without A Pre-Amp. Limitations?

Hi All,

I am just wondering What a pre-amp does first of all?. I have a basic idea I think.

I was looking at this AMP/DAC Combo: http://www.bursonaudio.com/HA_160DS.html

However it does not have a pre-amp. What does this mean? What will my limitations be?

Would I be able to watch DVD's with my headphones on?

Also One more question :P lol. Has Anyone had any experience with this Amp. I hear good things from other reviewers, however i would like to know what you audiophiles think.

P.S. Be Nice I Am New To This Scene :P.

Thank You.

Short answer: few limitations, probably won't matter to you.

I'll save you the time and technicalities, and just ask: what are you going to connect the Burson to?

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I would be connecting it from my PC mainly for gaming/music and my mac book pro for music as well.

I would like to be able to watch movies with it, however I have no idea how that works and what would connect into what?

 Thanks.

Bump. :P.

You won't be able to use the Burson as a way to control volume if you attach it to a power amp (amp without volume control). That's what a preamp lets you do.

Headphone wise for what you're looking to do you wouldn't even notice the fact it didn't have a preamp.

so pre-amp if for headphones like stax only?

No...Stax amps have volume controls too.

Preamp is pretty much only for a speaker set up. Not too common in a headphone chain.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Would I still be able to connect it to be able to watch DVD's?

Yes...It has nothing to do with what you put in, just what comes out.
