Best (?) full-size cans for classical at or under $100 preferably circumaural

I forget the other name for on the ear phones, but would prefer circumaural either open or closed.  Listen to orchestral classical, some piano/violin sonatas, some jazz w/vocals like Diana Krall, singers like Monica Mancini.  Celtic rock.

Top dollar I can go is around $100.  Looked at Beyerdynamic models, Sennheiser, Grado, and others.  Very interested in Beyerdynamics or Sennheisers I think and might be able to go a bit more.  Sometimes can find $150 phones for closer to $100 if used so those should be considered.

Will be listening to my MacBook Pro laptop playing lossless files, some other source material like movies on the laptop.

Would like to buy some next weekend if I can get some advice before then.

Your budget falls into some closed headphones which will present you classical music in a claustrophobic manner and if  is not closed it will have a dip in the mids and that is no no IMO. Save a little bit more and get akg k701 and lets say art amp which will make you enjoy classical music like it is meant to.

Good luck

audio technica ad300 perhaps? it is a little warm and not as spacious and clear as the higher models in the line but it is good for classical.

Wish I could but wont be able to spend the $200+ for long time. Will have to do the best I can for less.  Need some kind of cans now even if reproduction is less than perfect.

Hey, I listen a lot to classical and jazz too. Save up a bit and get the HD600 or DT880. Btw, neutral cans are best for classical. smily_headphones1.gif

It can sound a little off for sure, but if I were you I would by senn px 100 for 50 bucks or less and save up for some real neutral spacious headphones. Senns are not neutral but they are open, cheap, light, not requiring an amp and portable ( and there is a white version wink.gif ), should keep you satisfied until your real purchase (used section)

If I have 100 to spend,
I would get an AKG k271mk2...
Easy to power, big sounding..light on the head,
Closed can for some privacy as u crank up the orchestra!

If you don't want to save for the K702 ($200), try to get a used K-240MKll (for around $100).

The AKG K240 Studio is the same headphone as the 240 MK II, but is under $100 (new) because it doesn't come with the extra pads or extra cord.
