Looking to Invest on First Serious Headphones :0

Alright so, I need a present a teen whos sick of horrible quality Skullcandies and Bose products (although he, and I were quite satisfied by the FMJ) and I'm looking for a good set of cans as a christmas present for her. Here's my specs:

Price Range: $125 >
Music Genres: Dubstep, Rock, Electronic House
Essentials: Nice-looking designs for teens, importance on bass, good without an amp, decently clear mids/highs.

Keep in mind, she's 14 coming from Skullcandies, so looks and bass are going to be important. Very important.

I've been looking at Audio-Technica AT-M50 but I couldn't find a pair for cheap. Suggestions?

The ATH-M50 can be bought for $120 at Sound Professionals.

M50 is also not going to be rocking the bass department very much.

Agony: consider looking into V-Moda CrossFade LP, they look good and are reputed to have good bass.

For Audio Technica alternatives, read up on the Pro700--similar style to the M50, but also comes in an all-white version, and yes, they are reputed to be bassy.

Actually, FWIR, many reviews show the M50 performs decently with nice bass, and aunamped. Do you have any first-hand experience?

And I looked up SoundProfessionals and there they were for $119.

I like the bass on my M50s. It extends low enough for me and its punchy when it needs to be. I'm with Agony on this.

I also think they work fine unamped. My set up is about as as non-ideal as you can get and it sounds fine. They also sound fine from my ipod.

I don't really have experience with anything else, but thats my 2 cents.

I guess the word serious is relative. :)

You won't get any serious headphones for a budget that is $120 give or take.

But I understand it's for a teen girl, altho I hate Beats, I have to recommend you beat headphone mainly because you stated "...so looks and bass are going to be important...".

The trend for teens is Dr Dre beats and ugg boots. :)

Here is Canada, trend is Canada Goose (uniform for rest of us).. haha.

Yep, "serious" is quite relative. I see Audio Technica as serious compared to Skullcandy (lol Skullcandy) and I do own higher end cans, but this is a pretty nice improvement over Skullcandy G.I. She said she's tried Beats and she didn't like them (phew)

And I also think its funny how teens eith Beats think they have the best cans on the market because they cost about $300.

That brings me up to another question - these are compared to Beats (and I know the M50 is superior) but I've always wondered from an unbiased standpoint how much better they are.

^Canadian Goose? For some reason, all I see here in terms of goose down is "premium European goose fill".

Anyways, on topic.

I'd recommend you take a shot at Pioneer's entry level HDJ500 for looks and a decent amount of bass. The SL150 Souls aren't a bad contender either, though they're above budget. V-MODA Crossfade LPs are certainly another thing to consider in that price range, as some places carry them for a reasonable $80-$120 (Costco is the only one at the moment that offers $80, and in limited areas probably).

Well yeah, the M50 does sound good to my ears--tried them myself, and I'm not a basshead. But I thought bass was a priority, so I listed 2 headphones said to be especially good for their bass (though I haven't heard those 2, hence I recommended them as products you could look up).

Those HDJ500's look pretty nice. I'm pretty sure those are the ones my friends had - I tried them with a decent amp and it was pretty nice.

Do you have any firsthand experience and anything to compare to?

Sorry, no, I don't have firsthand expertise in what you're looking for. Like I said, I'm not a basshead, so my tastes will probably be wrong for your purposes.

AKG K518's are good for electronic music, but they are not very comfortable.

Yup, I'm pretty much set on the M50 after reading some discussions on it. Thanks for everything ^~^
