Bass / Soundstage Under $300

Hi, I'm looking for a second pair of headphones to accompany my HD 25-1's. They're a great pair of headphones and are good for rock, but now I'd like something that's almost the opposite. I'd like headphones with a large soundstage and a bit more warmth and thump to the bass (but still crisp, and not muddled). So, in list form:

- Circumaural

- Closed or Open

- Comfortable for long periods of listening - (I used to have the Beats and (disregarding the sound) I found the weight of the headphones to become annoying after listening for a while. The HD25's tight clamp can become annoying too.)

- Large soundstage

- Heavy, but crisp bass

- $100-$300

Thanks for any advice

Most headphones with a large soundstage are open, so that narrows it down a bit.

You can look into the Sennheiser HD 595. It's similar in design to the HD 650, for which I can confirm that the comfort is great.

The Shure SRH840 is a closed can, so I'd be worried about its soundstage.

There is also at the upper limit of your budget the Beyerdynamic DT 770. If I were you I'd go for this can, since its comfort and bass are both excellent considering its price.

Are you going yo use these cans in a portable or desktop setup by the way?

I see two options:

Closed: D2000

Open: HD650

DT 990 pro.

DT990s. Possibly the Fischer FA-011, but I haven't heard them and I hear mixed opinions on those.

The Fishers have a really smooth sound with good mids, but the DT990 owns it on the lows.

How do you think the HD650 stacks up to the DT990 in the sub bass region? You seem to like the same kind of cans I do, but the HD650 scares me in that everyone mentions how laid back they are. I'm not a fan of laid back.

The HD 650 is out of the OP's price range, and can't really be driven from a mobile phone.

If you were to stretch your budget a bit and build a nice portable amp such as the Mini3, then you'd be in metaphorical heaven.

Thanks for all of the replies, this is really helpful

To clear up a few things, I will be using these headphnes at home and possibly with an amp. Right now I just have a Fiio E5 to back up my HD25's, but I'll take any reccomendations if anybody thinks a certain amp is necessary or goes well with certain cans. As for price, the $350 that the DT990 and D2000's call for would be okay if they're worth it. I'll also pay extra for a good amp.

To be more specific about what I'm looking for, the main thing I'm looking for is soundstage, and comfort. The bass on the HD25's is nice and punchy, but if possible, I'd like a little more warmth and natural sound in that area. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I think you could say that I want something less analytical in the bass area. However, what I don't want is an overpowering or muddy bass that would make listening to rock unpleasant. For example, I have a pair of in-ear headphones called Atomic Bass that sound awesome for Daft Punk / deadmau5, but If I put some Red Hot Chili Peppers on, I can barely enjoy the melody at anything below full volume because all I can hear is bass. I'd like to avoid that issue.

As for the Beyerdynamic headphones, does anyone have any recommendations between models and the ohms concerning the above criteria?

Thanks again for all the help so far, I really appreciate it!

Dunno if I dreamt it, but I saw the HD650 being sold on Amazon for $279 refurb and one Used in 'Good Condition' going for $290,which is a steal, don't get it quick, get it now, coz they'll be like gone as soon as I post this lol...then go on to the Fullsize Heaphone Amp forum to ask for cheap options, which may include Darkvoice amps,Matrix M-Stage, DIY SOHA, DIY Bottlehead Crack $80(I Think thts wht its calld), Little Dot II+(though $80,it can power HD650's) or MKIII. This is obviously my learned opinion by research, I've never heard the can:),but ESW9A is a good option too.

 Beyerdynamic DT990 600ohm + Audio GD NFB-12

Best bang for your budget, sound stage plus some of the best bass in the business ~ I love mine with the Chili Peppers, it's a been a long time

coming since so many cans sound messy and harsh with their recordings (yes, the Chilis are badly mastered) but the DT990 does very well.

I agree. That is an excellent setup for the money.

The DT990 isn't a warm sounding headphone, quite the opposite really. HD650 is a nice option but I've never liked it on cheap setups, that in my opinion can sound muddy unless amplified well.

I don't normally suggest this but a D2000 might be more to your liking, it also doesn't really need much of an amp.

You're on a roll. I agree. The DT990s are anything but warm.

They are actually quite analytical, bass aside. While the mids are recessed, they are very detailed.
