but yeah. see. what i did waasss.

i got the hm5 during the cybermonday deal (and m4) figuring i could always cancel my order if anything prevents me from wanting them. and if i get them before i change my mind, reselling with a marginal profit is a good option too. hehe.

but. i'm currently searching for a local store where i can audition different headphones to more accurately identify my type of sound. best buy proved inadequate since they only had the beats and some other extremely low-fi phones to my ears.

does anyone else have thoughts on the KRK KNS-8400s marximus suggested?

resurrected because i remembered marximus's post.

how does bass on the fa-003 compare with the krk's??

i ask because i now have the  brainwavz hm5. i am happy with it, but i want more subbass.

Fischer has admitted that Yoga makes its drivers (presumably for all the models they get from them, which is quite a few) so HM5/FA-003 will be the same.

Have you given the HM5 a good burn in?  That should help with extension.  The FA/HM5 is a neutral signature... if you're looking for enhanced bass that's another category altogether.  The V-Moda M80 is reputed to have a nice little sub-bass boost, from what I've read.

I had the KNS 8400s and they're a bit light on the bass, to be honest. Haven't tried the FA-003/HM5 to compare, but based on what I've read and the design of the headphones (FA/HM5s are deeper), I'd expect the KNS 8400s to have less bass than the FA/HM5s.

Have you tried the M50s? They have good bass while still maintaining a relatively detailed, balanced tone (to my ears). Some people with more "audiophile cred" say they have recessed mids, or a "v" tone frequency, which is somewhat true, but that doesn't mean the mids are overshadowed.

Ultimately is more about what you prefer, rather than what others think about a particular headphone, so I'd say give them a try!

The FA-003 does improve bass-wise with burn-in, but the M50 will beat in in pure sub-bass quantity (I own both and have also auditioned the HM5 and come to the now-popular popular conclusion that it's the same). However, I believe you made the right choice. The HM5 is better all-around, and if you want a sub-bass boost you can get a JDS Labs CMoyBB.

thanks for the replies. here's what i'm doing.

i'll see how the hm5's improve over the next month or so.

in the mean time, i've ordered a denon d2000 and i'm pretty sure/anticipating that i'll be happy with those.

Good choices! The HM5 will do you well for refinement and neutrality, while the D2000 will provide you the bass you want.

Atomik, if you have a guitar center near you they may have the KRKs in stock to get a bit of hands on time. I know the one here in Cincinnati has them and when I was going around shopping for a few GC had the most on hand to compare live. Although I think mine may be strange for having the 8400s as a buddy of mine checked the location near his and they only stocked the 6400s. So if you have a few mins and there's on nearby give them a ring. If they have them in they'll let you bring in the HM5s and compare them.

funny. i actually did about 2 weeks ago. i was able to compare the 6400s. they had the 8400s in stock too but wouldn't let me do the comparison for some reason.

i can say i wasn't happy with the sound of the 6400s though. treble area was perfect but bass, subbass and midrange sounded anemic compared to the hm5. they also sounded thin and unengaging.

but like i said. the d2000s should be arriving soon.
